Gain question

When adjusting the gain on an amp when do you know youve turned it up to its RMS. That may not make sense cuz i am not sure about much when it comes to gain. I just dont wanna clip or blow my speakers by crankin the gain so somebody help me out.

so if you match the volts on your preamps to the volts that you have your gain adjusted to on the amp then it should put out the RMS power assuming you are running the amp at the power it is rated at (14.4 v/13.5 v...etc.)

Example:

Preamp outlets- 2volts

Gain-2 volts

Power to amp-14.4 volts

Power to speakers - whatever power it is suppost to deliver (rms)

IS this correct?

Turning up the gain will not increase db's. You turn your gain to match the preouts of a HU. You do this because if your gain is set too high then your amp will distort a lot more because you have not set it right.

ok, i dont think my amp has the volts MARKED on the gain control, and i found http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm pretty tough to comprehend. well I understood that you have to set you're amps volts to match your headunits, but it was all the extra technical info. I ordered a punch 300 watt amp, do you know if punch amps come marked with the volts on the preamp, or do you just estimate? I guess its not really a big deal

actually if you take a hu that is rated at 1volt and then have an amp that can adjust up to 2 volts and you turn your headunit up to 3/4 volume with the gain on the amp set to its minimum and then turn the gain up you will hear the db's increase. But the gain is not meant to increase the volume that the speakers put out but rather match the signal voltage from the headunit to the amp.
