Gain all the way down, still volume.

Ok guys..Im having a weird problem. The wiring harness is only supplying the HU with power. There are NO speaker wires connected through the HU, only pre-outs.

HU = IDA-X001

Amp = PowerBass XA-485

Now, with the gains all the way down on the amp, I still get normal volume from the HU. Does this sound like the HU or the amp? Ive never run into this issue before.

no, just minimum volume.

or if the gain is labeled as "input voltage" or such it will give you maximum volume. (the setting listed means the input voltage that would force the amp to apply rated output)

Misconception.

My gains are all down and I still have full power going to my speakers. I'm just using a pre-amp. Your HU may be supplying enough voltage to the amp to give it the correct power.

Best option here is to get out the DMM and just setup the gains properly. If all the way down gives you the correct power, then leave it alone.

X2, maybe your HU have high preout volt and that makes your amp send "normal power".

That's what is strange. My 8443 had 8v pre-outs, this one has 2v. My eclipse never did this though. It's not a big deal, just never ran into this before.
