First good sub, $150 budget.

I'm helping my friend pick out a sub, but I don't exactly know whats good for him. His previous setup was 2 kicker comps in a prefab sealed box. So anything will sound better. Here are the details:

$150 budget (give or take $5)

Single 12

Willing to run 400-600watts

Listens to mostly rap with occasional rock

Daily setup, no metering or competitions

Basically looking for SQL, but SQ>SPL if needed to choose

Sundown and Skar are both out b/c of the price. I was thinking either an AQ SDC2.5 or an Obsidian Audio 12. Does anyone know how the SQ on the Obsidians are?

I literally can't think of any other subs. Suggestions?

Obsidians should have good sq from everything I have read. You could check out sundown's SD series, I think they are about 150 and 500rms.

What I've seen from the reviews is:

Good for SPL and rocks the lows

Great price

People seem to buy like 8 of them (only seen set ups with 2+ woofers)

There are decent a amount for sale in the classifieds (Idk why)

Heard nothing regarding SQ

Obsidians sound great and get decently loud too. Good choice with that budget.

Guessing you run one? How do you like it, how does it sound, SQ wise and in general.

Ive seen those, apparently they get crazy low. But I cant see it being better than an Obsidian for the price.

My Obsidian has GREAT SQ, plays well below 25hz and has good top end output. Im really impressed with it, but an OA 12 will LAUGH at 600wrms. Im giving mine 7-800 from a memphis and its begging for that 1K. They just keep getting louder lol ide say you need 750 atleaste to really get the air moving

With 4-600 wrms idea go SSA DCON 12 or Sundown Eseries 12(there 105), or try out the IA 187 series(120).... Thoughs subs will have 500wrms all day

Oh rly? I was curious how the Obsidian would do on that power. I mean like I said, he's not trying to set off alarms but you think in general it needs more than rated?

Dcon was another option, I would of said get the 187 but they stopped making them. There is a new "I series" which is suppose to replace the 187 but I havent seen anyone run/test or even talk about one.

The Obsidians don't need tons of power. I ran my 15 on a couple hundred watts for a few weeks..it impressed me even on that little amount of power. Put it in a proper enclosure with 500-600 watts and your friend won't be disappointed.

I don't know why, but you should check out one of her videos on youtube. Her rack jiggles more than jello and I love jello.

Gonna pass on the Skar, I didnt exactly have a good experience with them. But either way, I'm sure one of the woofers above will work. Now to decide which one.

Does anyone else agree that the Obsidian need more than 600 to get moving?

Which pretty much leaves it to the Dcon or the AQ for now.

Does anyone know a place that still sells 187's?
