I have completed my first build and I stayed just about in the budget I had planned, and got just the right amount of sound I was looking for.

1998 Chevrolet Prizm

Aiwa CDC-X217 Headunit (Because I like it.)

4 x Pioneer 6.5" 2-way speakers 30w RMS (powered ~20w RMS off headunit)

2 x MTX Thunder 5000's in sealed enclosure 4ohm 250w RMS each, wired parallel for 2ohm

1 x Alpine MRP-M500 Monoblock Amp 500w RMS @ 2ohm

Wired with 8 guage for power, fused at 60 amps, 12 guage to subs, cut-off switch on remote wire for amp disable

Headunit: $35

Speakers: $90

Amplifier: $150

Subs: FREE

Wires, Misc: $60

I know it's not a high-end setup, but it's just right for now.

I bought the amp for now and the future. Later I plan on getting a small hatch/wagon and I will tuck a 10 or 12 inch sub in a small box.

Edit: Plus the free subs left me some extra $ to get the nice amp.

AutoZ0ne. They're clearanced for ~$55, then I used my discount.

Most stores carry a variety of units from either Dual or Kenwood, or both, and some don't. Only the Kenwood's are on clearance.
