Esitimated gain?

2db is less than one click on the volume, each click is 3db.
Joking? Depending on the HU, it's more like .5 or maybe 1.

You can easily hear a 2db diff, at 150 or 160....
2db is HUGE on the TL. Not so much to the ear-o-meter. Not at the same frequency, anyway.

I can't see it being more than +1db, honestly. Maybe +1.5? I don't know why people automatically assume a 4" coil is louder than a 3". It's a thermal thing. And the extra motor force of the 99's is needed to sling that big ass coil up and down. You ever see a 4" coil outside of a sub? It's gigantic sitting next to a 3"er.

So do you think going up to the M4a alone will be just as good of a gain?

For burps... yeah. Maybe even louder. Maybe. But for demos... the 4" coil will start walking a 3".

Basically... when people make posts like this... I want to prepare them for worst case scenario. People get all jazzed about sub swaps and/or adding power and they expect to turn it on have it blow their minds. It very rarely happens that way.

Keep your guesses and expectations low and assume modest gains. If +1.5 with an outside shot of +2 is worth the swap to you, then go for it. If +1.5 is going to piss you off and make you regret spending the extra money... find those gains elsewhere. Like, with a rebuild or efficiency. but all the while... keep in mind that +2db is just about the threshold for a "noticeable" gain. That's why I said it's huge on the TL but not so much to the ear.

My thoughts as well. 1db gain or less.. And even though Its only a 40% increase in power and that's not much when it comes to SPL, but depending on your electrical could be more then you can produce, plus i dont know your enclosure so your subs could already be at their mechanical limits as stated before.

Efficiency is what you want!

OP is this something your thinking of doing or already in the midst and waiting on equipment, because I'm interested to see the swap and test results.

2db is NOT noticable to the human ear. So if you want 2db on a meter then go for it, but otherwise you won't be able to hear it. Each click on your volume knob is a barely noticeable gain, aka 3db. Not .5 or 1.

I get home in 7 months and I want to have my mind made up before I get there. I dont jump into stuff like this anymore.

I'm the same way, in the process of putting my own in the works. But on your idea honestly bro if it's me, i don't upgrade once i'm over 150 db unless i'm either doubling power or doubling cone surface. Any less and it's not worth spending a signifigant amount of money for something that i might not even hear, but that's me.\

I'm looking at the DD M4 for my system as well more than likely on 2 18's, haven't decided which 18's yet though.

Dude... 1 decibel is the definition of JND. Or "just noticeable difference." And I don't know what f'n HU you use, but if each click is +3db... my HU goes to 186db. Awesome.

You do realize that is a fact that the human ear can not notice anything under 3 db right? Go do some research.

You do realize that it is a fact that some people can perceive less than a 1 decibel change and that I JUST told you that 1 decibel is the definition of JND, right?

Go do some research.

JND in Sound IntensityA useful general reference is that the just noticeable difference in sound intensity for the human ear is about 1 decibel.

JND = 1 decibel

In fact, the use of the factor of 10 in the definition of the decibel is to create a unit which is about the least detectable change in sound intensity.

That having been established, it can be noted that there are some variations. The jnd is about 1 dB for soft sounds around 30-40 dB at low and midrange freqencies. It may drop to 1/3 to 1/2 a decibel for loud sounds.
The standard definition of a decibel indicates that it’s roughly the smallest amount of volume change that a person can subjectively perceive.
differences of 1 decibel (about 9/8 difference in sound pressure) are perceptible. To most listeners a difference of 1 decibel is "just noticeable", 3 decibels is "clearly noticeable", and 10 decibels is "twice as loud".
At almost any region of the Fletcher-Munson diagram, the smallest change in intensity of a sinusoidal sound wave that can be observed, called the intensity just noticeable difference, is about one decibel
Shall I go on?

I was thinking about going Brazilian too. The Stetsom 7K will be a few hundred cheaper then the M4a and do a bit more power. I've heard the stories about Brazilians burning up, sound bad, ect... I heard the same stories about DD subs also and its not true at all.
