Ebayers/Im i wrong

i would have to agree with the people saying its your bad... I sell lots of stuff on ebay and buy even more. I never buy without knowing exactly how much shipping will be. Also shipping amps isnt always cheap. I always ship ups on breakables. I have them pack and ship and insure the items. I dont know the size weight or distance of shipping but i do know i have spent upwards of $80 after everythings said and done shipping some amps that i have sold. Most are between $30-50 but sometimes the price can get hefty. I have had plenty of people refuse to pay due to high shipping costs on items. I always list a shipping price though. Its part of the game. Pay the shipping and be happy with your item.
Man, you're getting ripped off. I've shipped a few amps, well packaged, and none have cost more than $15-20. Hell, I shipped a 25 lb subwoofer that I packaged very well for less than $30. They truly screw you if you have them pack stuff up and you pay them for the box and packing materials.

If you buy your own packaging materials, its a hell of a lot cheaper.

the same thing wat i was thinking.

I think you're being an *** yourself. You should have asked what shipping would be before bidding. Instead you assumed. We all know what happens when you assume, right?

I've had a few people complain about my shipping charges but I also make sure they understand it covers double boxing, foam, my gas, and my time. Go to Staples and add all that crap up. It's not as cheap as you think.

If you just want your new amp thrown into a flat rate box you're a fool. By the time they get done drop kicking it all the way to your house it will be junk.

Maybe he'll ship it for cost if you allow him to just stick a shipping label to the amp itself? Hell, who needs a shipping box anyway? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blackeye.gif.66a1670f5aaf7f406e783a63e3387dc5.gif

The people defending the seller sound like the same type of jerks that believe their time costs money. Apparently it doesn't - or they wouldn't be attempting to charge you for it as a shipping fee. Its just another way for people online to nickle and dime other people and justify it as "their time is money."

Now, were you right to buy an item before settling all of the charges before hand? No. Was the seller right to post "contact seller for shipping charges" and not respond if indeed you gave him 9 hours? No.

Ebay won't do shit as Ebay usually does- the seller is going to have an uber pain in the *** getting any extra money out of you based on an outrageous shipping cost. The first guy to reply to this thread was right- if it comes down to it you will technically be right, 45 dollars is excessive to ship an amp. But in the end you and the seller were(and are) both being greedy.

If the total price is fair (even with a high shipping price) pay the man and get your amp.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but what condition is the amp in? If it's anything less than BNIB, I wouldn't pay. You can get that amp for $450 shipped brand new from woofersetc.com and $434 from onlinecarstereo.com.

Shipping materials don't cost that much, and niether does the shipping itself. Most people have boxes laying around they can ship in. I have a whole freaking shed full ofbig ones, plus about a dozen normal size ones each in my basement and my closet. When i buy stuff, i keep the box it came in if there's a chance I may sell it. I also save any packing material (bubble wrap, air sacks, peanuts, etc) from when stuff is shipped to me. I don't do very much business, just enough to keep my hobbies going, but I still usually have everything I need to ship stuff without buying anything extra. The only stuff i evr have to buy is the occasionall roll of bubble wrap, packing tape, or brown parcel paper, none of which is all that pricey.

Also, if you don't ship packages for a living (i.e. working at a UPS, FedEx, or DHL store), you shouldn't presume to be worthy of getting paid extra for the time spent packaging and shipping the product. You make you're money off the sale, and charge whatever shipping costs you. Anything extra, except in special circumstances, is just asinine. That's just you trying to milk the sale for more than it's worth.

All of my auctions have FREE shipping. Not only does it make more people bid on the item, but I don't have to worry about trying to find out an exact amount prior to shipping.

With that said, I know why people charge a high shipping charge on eBay. If I sell an item for 19.99 with free shipping, I owe eBay "x" amount of dollars. If I sell the item for $4.99 with $15.00 shipping, the eBay fee is much less. When you're dealing with $400.00 items on a constant basis , I'm sure you would save a lot of money in eBay fees by charging $325.00 + 74.99 shipping instead of $400.00 with FREE shipping.

Regardless, I will always offer FREE shipping. The customers love it!

It isn't really inflated like most of you say, I myself will charge higher shipping, Why? Theres listing fees, paypal fees (most of the time), ending fees, packing materials, and of course the trip to the post office.
Are listing fees shipping expenses? No. So it shouldn't be included in the shipping fees.

Are paypal fees shipping expenses? No. So it shouldn't be included in the shipping fees.

Are ending fees expenses related to shipping the item? No. So it shouldn't be included in the shipping fees.

Shipping fees are exactly that; Fees related to shipping the item.

Not an opportunity to recoup all of the costs that should have already been factored into the price of the item.

You people act like shipping should be 5 bucks. Wrong. You must be that guy that ships subwoofers in an old ratty box with nothing but some leftover packing peanuts to protect it. Shipping a subwoofer or an amp SAFELY cross country will cost you some dough. Sorry. That's just how it is. Saving the original box is great, but not for shipping. You need to DOUBLE BOX and I don't have room to be storing boxes all over my house. Sure, I have a few but 9 times out of 10 they won't fit what I'm shipping.

When I'm shipping a 12 year old Soundstream, PPI, or any other high end, old school amplifier that I advertised as "pristine condition" you'd better know I'm gonna pack it right. TWICE! Same goes for any other electronics that someone is paying upwards of $200 or more for. Packing peanuts and old newspaper don't cut it.

A year ago I bought an old school PPI Powerclass amp off of ebay. The auction said it came with the original box and everything. Awesome! Unfortunately the seller was a cheap azz numbnuts who thought the original box would also make a good shipping box. The box arrived beat to hell, amp half hanging out(which was also beat to hell), tape and labels ALL over the box ruining it. I got my money back after a long drawn out battle between me, the seller, and Fed-EX. But my money was tied up for a month, I didn't get to keep the once pristine amplifier I thought I was going to get, and the once pristine amplifier and it's original box was now junk. Everyone lost IMHO. I would have gladly paid more for shipping just so I could have kept that amplifier. Fed-Ex told me that under no circumstances is the original box considered a shipping container no matter what the item is. This is why someone dedicated an entire thread on how to properly ship items. I think some of us are getting tired of receiving junk when we think we're getting something nice.

Just recently, on the freebies thread, I gave away 4 door lock motors. I told him it would cost 5 bucks to ship (just picking a round number in my head). After all, how much could shipping be on such a small, lightweight item? The total turned out to be almost 9 bucks ona box that probably weighed 1 pound. Luckily I had a box they fit in and didn't have to buy that also. It cost me 4 dollars to "give" away 4 door locks.

Note: I've had the "excessive shipping fees" discussion with ebay once before. They told me that as long as I list it as shipping and handling I can pretty much charge what ever I want.

Wrong. I've shipped a few amps to people on this forum. I just shipped a sub to Fast1one about a month ago. The sub was shipped in the original box with added padding on the inside (air bags and bubble wrap). I spent no more than $25 on ANY of those shipments, and they were all packed well. The majority of packing materials used were from old shipments I had recieved. I have been the victim of crappy packaging in the past. The first subs I ever bought were a pair of 15s off of eBay when I was 16. The guy threw them in a flimsy box with some newspaper and magazine pages, and not nearly enough of those. By the time the subs got to me, the box was breaking open, and one of the baskets had been bent at a 90 degree angle. I however, never got my money back. I know how to ship items correctly and I make **** sure that the customer doesnt have a problem because of the way I shipped a package.

Please, go ahead and contact any of these members. They've all recieved fairly pricey electronics from me and I'm sure they can tell you how well I protect the equipment WITHOUT charging $40 to ship an amplifier.

Siddle (amp), Smokingachicken (tail lights), MisterGrubbs (amp), Fast1One (sub), MiniVanMan (amp), Apollyon (PSP)

Just for example, I recieved a 12" custom TC9 from TeamPSI. It was packaged almost identically to the subs in the "proper shipping" thread. It weighs in at ~45 pounds, and the shipping fees were still less than $50 with insurance.

I guess that's true if you want to eat the cost of your time and packing materials. Personally I don't which is why I list it as a handling fee. By the time I pack, deliver, and come back home I'm out an hour or more of my time plus the packing materials. But I also list the shipping and handling as a flat rate in the auction so you know what it's going to cost before you bid. No worse than people charging "paypal fees" on this board. To each his own.

I agree, 45 bucks is high for just a single, small amplifier. But it's still his fault for not waiting for a reply before bidding. All the other auctions seem to be asking close to 430 dollars plus shipping. The most common shipping price on ebay for that amp seems to be between 25 and 30 dollars. If you believe that his time is not worth any money then why are you *****in about another 10 or 15 dollars yourself? Pay the man for teaching you a lesson and move on.

I understand charging for materials, and I agree that it's no worse than the paypal fees. However, I still don't think you should be paid for your time because you're not a professional shipper. Hell, if you think you should be paid for every little thing, take it all the way. Charge people storage fees for letting the stuff sit around your house. Charge restocking fees for any returned equipment. There's no end to what you could charge following that logic.

I don't mean to start a personal grudge here, but I just can't justify charging as much as you claim. Let's just take this guy's amp as an example.

$45= $3 box for double-boxing (assuming the equipment is in original packaging already), $10 max in bubble wrap/ foam peanuts (which you wouldn't use all of anyway), and probably about $15 for shipping via fedEx Home Delivery. That adds up to $28, meaning that the seller thinks he should be paid $17/hour for packing the equipment and driving to the FedEx store. I don't even think FedEx/UPS pay most of their employees that much.
