door speaker build log (pics)

Ok I think I might have something that will help me....these are window shutter clips that hold your shutters on your house...I've used them before to hold grills on because they fuit snugly in the holes that are in the door but you can pull them out so the grill will come off without removing the door...I had previously modded the stock grills when I had different speakers in the doors to do this, but I don't think they will work in this situation so I am still in need of some type of frame thing to stretch the cloth over.

Well it still needs alot of cosmetic doctoring but my install is finally to the point that I can listen to it...all I can say about deadening is DO IT if your thinking about it....holy previously unheard midbass...it already sounds alot better than my old set up and I'm not done tweaking it yet, going to put the tweeters on a long wire and move them around to center the imaging.

I saved the plastic moisture barrier to use as a template

I also made templates for the tin plates by stuffing cardboard in the doors and tracing it with a magic marker.

Next up...Making this mess look good. (or at least better)

Well after spending some time in the dunce corner I think i've come up with a full solution to my hacked up door panels...

First off I will cover the old stock grills in tinfoil....then cover them in fiberglass mat to make replicas of the old grills except they will be taller to hide the cut I made in the door...Then I will take the plastic window pegs in the photo above and align them to the holes in the door panel...drill through the fiberglass and stick the pegs into the holes...another layer of glass to flush the pegs so they don't poke out when I add fabric over the top...cut the middle of the new grill out and then wrap in fabric...What do you think? Some potential problems I've thought about include the unevenness of the top of the panel where it fits flush against the dash when the door is closed. another is the pegs not being long enough but i'm sure I could work around that somehow....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Excellent! Outstanding! You can do it man!

Nice thing about it.. If the piece doesn't fit up nice.. chunk it and start over. Ain't no thang. Just be careful with the resin... nasty stuff.. Otherwise I'd be building my own sub box. Might still try it if I can build it completely outside the vehicle.. and my garage for that matter.. Only thing I really need is the spare tire.

Ok well I finally have more free time to finish the grills on my doors But I have a few questions. I am New to fiberglassing....I'm sure if I searched I could figure it out eventually...but instead I will just ask, what will I need for materials on this project? i.e what type of fiberglass mat and resin etc. and where to buy it.

Thanks.

Are you mounting your tweeters down by the mid? If so I'd put them up higher for sure...
Yeah I just have them mounted low for the time being...going to put them on long wires and see where they sound best. I used to have them in the a pillar and I think they will end up back there because they are not even close to loud enough being mounted in the doors
