Canada does have a large reserve of oil, in the form of sand. It is a very heavy oil and requires more refining the lighter oil, thus it would cost more at the pump.

Short term would be getting oil prices lower to help sustain the economy to allow funding for research of alternative fuels for the long term...

At what cost? Ruining the wildlife reserves? I'll pay extra for gas if I can be assured that a renewable fuel source will be there in the future.
