donpisto's '01 Accord Build Log (Alpine, Zapco, TC Sounds)

Many thanks to James Bang for being a cool dude helping me tune my setup, even though it was to check out how well my noob self tuned it....way off //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

how did you have it tuned?
Time alignment was off...crossover points and slopes a bit off

It was mainly the time alignment and the track I was using. I mainly used the live version of Hotel California by the Eagles but his voice seems to jump around on my stage. I got to listen to Yael Naim's album. Awesome vocals and some good songs too.

how's your setup coming along? you like those speakers so far?
Coming along slow at the moment. I want to get the tweeters in the a pillars but figuring out best way of doing it and if possible making them hidden, if not, no big deal.

I'm liking the speakers a lot better than the Iridiums. The tweeters get loud and are not harsh at all. The Iridium tweeters were a bit harsh at times...well more like being a little too bright. Mid bass on the Zapcos are way better than the Iridiums, but after listening to James' car again, I'd like to upgrade to 8's, but I'm not going to.

The stage is higher now than it was when I had the Iridiums and it is also more lively. It's probably about eye level when the Iridiums were a little below, wasn't bad and the Iridiums do sound good, but I prefer the Zapcos much more.

so what did you end up setting your crossover points and slopes at?

I was just listening to my system yesterday and notice that in some songs, they play at above eye level or even above my head. how far up do you have your tweeters sitting?

tweets: 2.8khz

mids: 80hz - 2.8khz

sub: 80hz

You can play around w/ the x-over point and slope where the mid meets the tweets.

maybe your tweets can play a little lower, so might want to try 2.5khz or so. I just didn't want to cross your tweets too low where they can be damaged. Also, for the tweets, I would use an 18db/oct slope or higher. I like steeper slopes, which is why i think I set all your slopes to 24db/oct.

Thanks for chiming in. I checked the Fs of the tweeters... it's 1.3k and the Fs on the mids are actually 43 Hz, not not 49 like I thought.

I have mine set at

tweets 3.2@24

mids 2.5@12

i seem to like it there. i might be messing around with it a little more when i get the chance.

Yeah I'm gonna do some tweaking. James provided a 31 band eq testing things so I'll see how that goes. I wanna see how big of a difference it makes once I get the tweeters in the pillars as well.

I'm facing some issues now. Originally I planned for the enclosure to be a wedge style facing the rear seats (sub on the wedge face). Here's a pic to get an idea of the angle I'm dealing with.

I can't deal with any measurements since the vehicle is in the shop for about a week, but I'm trying to get ideas of how I will mount the sub in the enclosure and get the enclosure in the vehicle. The seatbelt casing that hangs from the rear deck causes me to lose a good 2 - 3". Because of it, I'm restricted to about 16 - 17 inches of height for the enclosure.

I do want some trunk space towards the rear of the vehicle, plus the amps will be there and i don't want to move the enclosure every time I want to show the amps or something.

I am possibly thinking about considering IB, but not sure if I want to deal with the hassle or if it will even work with the 18.

I do have a question though. As far as loudness goes, would I notice a difference between the sub firing upwards or facing the rear seats?
