Went over this in a class I took this semester, Drugs, Society and Behavior.

Search the Iran-Contra and you'll learn all about the details of what the government did with selling/importing drugs into certain parts of the US (mostly california).

im going to assume you didnt read the part of the op post in which i was reffering to eh?
Yes, I did. Your assumptions in that statement you made about drug addiction are devoid of reality. Yes, people first make a choice to drink or take drugs, but those who become alcoholics or drug addicts become powerless to stop. This is not some myth from a comic book, but medical fact. Free will no longer has anything to do with it. So to say "they made a choice" and assume they can "just stop" (where is Nancy Reagan?), is about as far from reality as you can go. Unfortunately, you have plenty of company in that perception. It is part of what fuels most police drug units, the DEA and the War On Drugs.

What you may not have realized in your rather short life on this planet, the War On Drugs has been going on since the Nixon Administration and it has cost over $17 billion, and as a result of this so called war, drug overdose deaths have risen over 540%, the cost of heroin has gone down by 2/3, and the purity has increased 2/3, and it is easier to get (that is just an example, we could talk cannibis or coke and have some bad numbers there too, just not the overdose deaths). The largest percentage of prisoners in this country comprises drug arrests, most of which are users for simple possession. http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2008/07/slammed-welcome-to-the-age-of-incarceration.html

Drug dealers are the lowest scum on earth. They prey on people and make a living off of a disease. Yes, it is a disease, like diabetes. Not a choice.

crack isnt a drug invented by the government to kill all of the negros as some people might assume. It is simply economics..... At the time before crack, what was the popular drug?? Cocaine. But the downside of cocaine was that it is expensive and somewhat hard to buy if you poor/middle class. So crack is a form of cocaine that is more potent and cheaper.... also easy to get and buy, no messy powder. So this appealed greatly to the poor/middle class because they wanted to have the class of doing cocaine but not at the cocaine price. Another example... Stockings.... Before nylon stockings were invented the were made of silk(very expensive) once nylon stockings came out and were available to the masses this gave the less fortunate people the opportunity to buy a somewhat classy product and not have to pay alot!

This is why crack became so popular, not because the government put it in everybodys mouth in the ghetto and made them smoke it. However who invented cocaine nobody knows for sure. The actual chemist/coke addict who made it in their basement for the first time is not known. There are people credited with spreading crack around parts of the country.

meh.

shits not getting any better on this 'war on drugs'. yes people started using it for whatever reason and got addicted. can they stop? maybe , maybe not. but it was their choice to start , so its their problem. not ours. no matter who gets in office and swears what they will/can do will work , the shit will always be around. always has been. with that said , people will always be overdosing , and there will always be drug related crime.

i agree that it is bullshit that the majority of the prison/jail population is possesion charges , but untill people start speaking up and voting to get pot charges lessened , it will always be that way. as far the other drug charges (coke , crack , heroin , extacy , etc..), you will never be able to convince anyone that anything about those drugs are benificial to anyone or anything. thus , those will remain the same.

i find it ****ing rediculous that we spend 'x' amount of billions of dollars to fight a loosing war. but thats america. why fix the economy situation when we can arrest hundreds of thousands of users who will never spend more than 24 hours in jail for a possesion charge yearly.

IMO.

/pointless rant.
