Theres not alot of talk on here about DIY so i started this to see if many here run them. Right now i have Vifa PL18 and maxfi tweets. I dont know why more people try DIY. The prices of the brand name equipment is getting out of hand. Anyone else trying DIY?

Yeah I'm saving up for a 3-way active DIY setup... I too am surprised at the small amount of people that do it. I saw the DLS Iridiums 6.3s go for $950 ish... I thought to myself, I could have a pretty kick *** DIY setup for a little over half that...

Sorry, I don't mean to threadjack, but since you posted this topic I decided to ask my question here. What exactly is the difference between DIY and a "pre-matched" 3-way component set? Theoretically, shouldn't the stuff I see on madisound and partsexpress be put together and perform at the same level as a pre-matched 3-way system but remain a lot cheaper?? Or am I mistaken? I'm looking at the prices on some of the Morel, Dayton, Peerless, Vifa stuff on PE and the prices seem "out of hand" (in a '****, that's cheap!' way) like 99stang suggested...

I just picked up some CD-2 COMP horns and plan on running them with CX54 mids and XXX 6.5" midbasses. The reason I think more people don't try DIY is because it's an "unknown" sort of thing and people get scared about stuff like that. As far as a difference between DIY and "pre-matched" sets, with DIY YOU choose the crossover point, speaker level, power to each speaker, etc. So in the end they're still the same speakers, you just get to adjust them to how you like them. Some people would rather just buy a set of speakers, screw them in and turn them on without tuning and spending hours adjusting little things to get them to sound perfect. To each his own I guess.

well i had most of the parts to run a DIY setup but then sold them all. my plan was 2 sets or XXX mids 30mm maxfi tweets (was going to upgrade to horns later) a 6 channel amp and an audio controll dqx active xover

well with premade comp sets you just need a 2 channel amp and youre set. it's user friendly to n00bs and lazy people and would satisfy the majority of people.

DIY sets, you need a 4(+) channel amp and an active xover. a lot better adjustability and freedom, but a lot more time, dedication, and know-how needed.

i personally have illusion horns and ID CX62s, probably gonna sell em for something with more midbass (xxx are a good possibility).

As stated DIY vs. pre-made you're paying for the crossover more than anything. I am running a 3-way set of XXX's, CSS 4"s, and Seas Performance tweets. I've taken the midbass off the gto 755.6 and sold that to get a gto 75.4 to run the tweets/midrange and a bpx 600.2 on the midbass. It does the job nicely:D, 300 per midbass, about 55 per midrange and 70 per tweet.

my suggestion when you decide to run Active is to get a good HU to cross everything over with. Eclipse has and has had several quality units that would work perfectly.

I use the CD8053 with my dyn 360 components to run them active. works perfectly.

iam running koda 6 midbass with a vifa pl 4.5" midrange and vifa xl tweets. sounds awsome and for the money i dont think i could of gotten anything better

as stated above, numerous times....

the main thing that benefits comp sets VS DIY is the number of channels needed. I dont think that the crossover is a significant factor to people unless they are newbies. The fact that the DIY setup is utilizing 4 channels vs the comp set only using 2 channels. Most people like to have rear speakers and use the other 2 channels for the rear. I was one of these people as well.

As far as my DIY setup:

I am running xxx6.5's with an Audiobahn 3way crossover and Aura tweets. I have an AudioContro three.1 with a 70hz Crossover module for the mids( they normally come with a 125hz module). The Mids are tuned to be active in the ~70 - 2.5k hz range. The tweets are active from ~3k-10k hz range.
