Direct TV and HDTV Questions...

the dvr allows you to record shows yes, directv should have an hd dvr if your interested

also keep in mind dish is about to lose all their locals in hd since they have been violating the fcc laws regarding east and west coast feeds(la/ny)

as far as amount of channels, directv broadcasts all the channels currently broadcasting in hd. and they are adding more as they become available, if anyone else is "broadcasting" hd, its because they are upconverting them. if you want locals, i'd suggest the off air antenna, you'll pick up more channels than available via directv.
upconverting? directv has like 10 channels in hd if that and theirs definatly at least 20 more that are true hd channels their may be some that are upconverted but direct tv sucks for pq i would look into something else if that was the only way. and i doubt dishnetwork is gonna lose their channels

i still say dishnetwork is the best nothing close as far as how many channels their is in hd. and how good it looks even though it will look like crap compared to hd-dvd

let me add right now im watching ant bully in hd-dvd

I have had the Direct TV HD package for a while now. Whomever you get service from it still dissapoints me how little content is available in HD. The sets have been available for years, and yet the majority is still standard crap even though these sets are becoming affordable for more and more people. If you see whats available in 1080i or 720p....just think how long it will take to benefit from those 1080p sets minus the HD movies which again is slimm pickens. If it weren't for DTV giving me a waiver on LA HD networks, I wouldn't even have networks in HD, as Seattle still is behind the times, and I live in the boonies. More HD....More HD....

my dad has time warner hd, and the only good things on are sports.

love watching the bucks and the cavs in hd, but there's really nothing else on.

i would say the coolest things in hd are the nature shows, which seem to be plentiful, but after a while, you get over the 'wow' factor of the hd, and realize you're just watching sub-par nature shows

more and more regular (read: good) programming will be in HD in the near future, tho

dish does have the most HD channels, but has anyone actually looked at the list? there are a lot of crap channels. other than the few that every other HD provider has, they are all pretty much useless channels that no one is ever going to watch.

here is the list of all of them on Dish (not including local channels which everyone has):

Showtime HD

Starz HDTV

HBO HD

Animania HD

Family Room HD

GamePlay HD

Discovery HD Theater

Equator HD

National Geographic Channel HD

DISH Network PPV in HD

Film Fest HD

Food Network HD

HDNet Movies

Kung Fu HD

Monsters HD

World Cinema HD

HDNews

Rave HD

ESPN HD

ESPN2 HD

NFL Network HD

Rush HD

WorldSport HD

Gallery HD

HDNet

HGTV HD

TNT HD

Treasure HD

Ultra HD

Universal HD

BOLD = channels DirectTV also has

here is the DirectTV list (not including local channels which everyone has):

Showtime HD

HBO HD

TNT HD

ESPN HD

ESPN2 HD

Universal HD

Discovery HD Theater

HDNet

HDNet Movies

point is just that right now, the amount of HD channels sucks. Dish does have a better lineup and is a better deal all around between the two, but as mentioned above, with all the HD TVs being sold, more people owning then, the years that it's been around, etc. it's pretty sad how lacking the channels are. from what i have read, although the switch to HD won't happen til 2009, a lot more channels will start HD broadcasting.

the programming on my Time Warner is similar to that of DirectTV, which of course is sad, but i pay a hellofalot less than satellite people are for a package that includes digital cable, hdtv, dvr, movie channels, phone and high speed internet.

So I placed my order for DirecTV. Problem is my apartment faces the North and you need a good shot to the "southern sky" to have service...Maybe they will mount the antenna on the roof? haha who knows we'll see.
