Diagnosing Problem With Speakers

Well, I had another thread but after 4 bumps in a few days no one else responded, so I'm trying a new thread in this section. Here's the deal:

Origin of problem:

When I had stock head unit and stock speakers in my car, one day when I was driving, the driver's side speakers cut off. However, if I made a sharp turn sometimes they would cut back in, but if I made a turn in the opposite direction, they would cut out again.

I thought this happened because my girlfriend was blasting the speakers one day, and when I turned on the car the next time after, the radio was not turned off, and the stereo was BLASTING when I turned on the car, so I thought that could've damaged something?

Next, I replaced my front speakers for a pair of CDT components. I thought it was the speakers. Still have the stock head unit, and the same problem exists, however now the sound does not cut back in on a sharp turn.

If you fade the sound to the front components only, and the DRIVER'S side, then switch to front components only on the PASSENGER'S side, you hear that the DRIVER'S side speakers have about 1/6 the output of the PASSENGER'S side.

I originally thought the channel was blown in the head unit, but maybe it is a wiring problem?

I have the head unit out, and am looking at the speaker wiring harness, but I have no clue how to diagnose if it is a speaker wire. My question remains, how do I test out each wire to see what the problem is? I never tried to solve a problem like this before so I'm pretty newb to it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Thanks in advance for all of your help, if you need more info to help me out, let me know.

To diagnose wheter it is your hu or not you can just take a individual speaker and hook it to the speaker outputs of your radio. Do this one at a time to make sure that every output is working. If everything checks out here I would make sure all connections are good at the harness and at the speakers. If these too are good Check in between the doors to make sure there is not a pinched wire in the rubber boot that runs between the door and subframe. If there is no visible damage instead of hacking your harness up just run speaker wire from the hu to the speakers. just follow the path of the factory harness and zip tie in key locations to keep everything neat and out of the way.

x2

If you test and conclude the Fr. driver speaker output from the HU is ok and the speaker plays at full volume, then you've DEFINTELY got a loose wire in the line. for it to cut in and out base on bumps or turns of the vehicle is a dead giveaway that there's a pinched, damaged or loose wire between the speaker and headunit. How have you connected the wiring harnesses? solder? butt connectors? black take? scotch tape? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

lol... I didn't install the speakers myself. However, like I said this was before the install. I'll take a look when I get home, and probably post pics cause I'll be confused about something or other. THANKS BOTH OF YOU!

Wow.... So after so much frustration with this **** thing, I figured out the problem and it wasn't the speaker wire....

I was testing the speakers through my IPOD which connects through the tape player and today I tested them through the radio and a CD because I left my IPOD in my house. So, the IPOD connected with the cassette tape adapter is the only source that makes the left side sound like that.... When I play through CD Player or Radio the sound is perfect.

What the hell? I never heard of this //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif Has anyone heard of this or know how to fix? Again, CD player and radio work fine, but the IPOD cassette adapter plays the left side of the speakers very lightly compared to the right. Could it be the cassette adapter itself?

Ha ha yeah it is the cassette adaptor no offense but the cassette adaptors are pieces of junk. Take and rotate the wire where it plugs into the ipod and it may play a little every now and then =) Get a high quality fm transmitter sq is alot better.
