Determining Voltage

Here's a simple and basic question for most of you but I can't figure it out. I've got a Tsunami amp and when I shut everything down the blue light around the "Tsunami" label is barely lit and when I disconnect the remote lead it goes totally off. I contacted ED and they want me to test the voltage on the wire so I went and bought a digital multimeter. Now I need to know where to put the leads to test the voltage. Do I put the remote wire between the 2 leads or the red lead on the remote wire and the black lead to a ground? Ask me any question on insect biology, contract law, or anything dealing with managing a termite/pest control company and I've got an answer for ya but anything electrical and I draw a blank LOL. Thanks for any replies.

Measure on a DC voltage scale, between ground on the amp (negative meter lead) and the remote terminal. They suspect that your remote wire has voltage on it when it should be off.

Thanks for the reply, it helped quite a bit. I measured it with the car on and it was 13.8 something, with the car off and faceplate off it measured .783. Is this normal and like I said the light is barely on and I'm also wondering why it doesn't light up the smaller amp. I guess I'll e-mail back ED and let them know what I found.

I would expect it to go to near zero with the HU off. .7 volts might be barely enough to turn the amp on.. like you're seeing. If you were an electronics weenie I'd tell you to put a diode in series with the HU remote to drop that .7 volts down to zero.

It doesn't actually turn on the amp but it's just enough current to barely light the ring around the Tsunami logo. The tech at ED mentioned the same thing in an e-mail so I'll have him send me a diagram like he offered. When you mention in series in that do you mean cut the wire, put in the diode, put the wire back on and put that into the amp? If that's the case that seems kinda simple so I'll do that. Thanks for replying.
