Design my setup

I'm looking into getting a 5.1 setup in my living room. bookshelf speakers for the fronts, center will sit on top of TV, floor standing speakers for the rear and a sub(needs to be a small prefab one, no giant 15" avalanches haha). soooo, suggest me kick *** setup using whatever components...the budget is $1600

The choice of using bookshelf speakers for the mains and floorstanders for the satellites is an odd one - you do realize that's the home audio equivalent of putting an excellent comp set behind you with 6x9's in the doors? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Bose isn't worth the space to talk about it.

On a related note, I do have two JBL three-way bookshelf monitors that would make excellent rear channels, that I'm letting go for a good price //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

I would go Definitive Technology. No need for subs, they are built into the towers. AWESOME SOUND! And a workable budget too.

If there is a soundtrack or Ultimate Electronics near you, look em up.

hmmm i didnt realize that. only reason i suggested it was because i have book shelves on the side of my TV and my couch is pretty tall so i figured floor standing speakers would do better in the rear...there is no wall to mount speakers on for the rear because i have one of those kitchen/living room combo things....maybe floor standing for the front and rear would be better?

I would go floorstanders for the front, and bookshelves for the back, just to save some money...you don't need an extremely powerful rear stage. Mount the satellites on stands if you need them higher.

If you've got $1600, why not go line array? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'd invest most of your money into the center channel and mains (towers). That's where most of the sound is going to come from. In most movies, the surrounds are mostly for ambience.

I don't know why you'd want a pre-fab subwoofer.
prefeb because cheaper, im lazy, no where to put a giant box with 2 15s in it...cuz if i did it myself it would def have 2 15 avas in it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif plus i dont want to rock the pictures off my walls haha

C'mon, that's what a HT setup is for, re-decorating //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Even a DIY single 12" will be cheaper than the commercial equivalent of the same quality.

where could i look for prices on home audio subs and amps for the sub?

also, who makes a good 5.1 receiver now a days?

Most "car audio" subs do an admirable job as home drivers, with only a careful attention paid to the enclosures used...

For receivers; NAD, Denon, Onkyo & Pioneer have some good offerings, as well as many others.
