Decent gaming CPU

$204 for that combo at the bottom seems like a good price. Thanks, Ill keep that in mind.

Is it sad that I remember when Ram was $100 a megabite?

Yup, I remember going to Costco and paying $99 for a 1MB SIMM for my PC, I was upgrading from the base 640k and man I was sure I would never need to upgrade again after that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Yes that is true, I was just stating windows XP in general because not many people use XP 64 due to driver incompatabilities and such. I admit I havent looked recently at 64-bit XP so idk what compatibility is like now.
I can understand your negative outlook on 64 if you haven't used it recently. The newer updates have made it into a very powerful and stable operating system. I am very pelased with it so far.

I'm not saying that having a degree in computer science doesn't make you knowledgeable on the topic, but I have my MCSE and no nothing about microsoft products anymore *shrug*

Jntar you know I got your back here. I would recommend first, one of the Corsair power supplies. They are great PSU's and they are among the most stable on the market in their price range. The memory you are looking at is good, but for real gaming I would go with a step up on the XMS series at the least. Trust me you will notice the difference.

What exactly is your budget on a system right now? DO you already have the video card? Are you locked in on the case? Does noise effect your decision on that at all? I do have some very nice custom systems built around gaming starting off @ $850 right now. They are not on the site yet, but I am working on that.

If it's in your budget I would look tot he new AMD quad core processors. Motherboard and processor run about $450, but even if you simply base your motherboard off of the new AM2+ platform you are really future-proofing your system since all the new AMD processors are based on that. (Note: you can indeed buy a lesser motherboard that is AM2+ I beleive the price starts off around $70, but again if you want to futureproof your purchase in the build I'd recommend either the Asus or Gigabyte motherboars @ $200+)

Next, are you going to be using windows vista? or are you going to be using windows XP? If you are going to use Vita I recommend at least 2gb of system memory as well. If you have any other questions feel free to post here or pm me. I'd also be happy to spec out and build a system for you as well. (benefit to that being I'm certified and can warranty everything in the system for up to three years, as well as provide tech support and do so for about the same price as you would be looking at total for your system) http://www.alchemy-computers.com btw to check out what I have to offer, right now again tho just my laptops are up, but I can design rigs as well by request.

Well, AMD at this price range is not a good decision unless you're going to take advantage of the Spider platform (which you're not) and the 8600 GTS is a really poor choice given that the HD 3850 is the same price but performs relatively equal to the 8800 GTS ...
This is what I would do for $1100 ...

I appriciate the offer, but I want to build this one on my own //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I will be running XP pro 32 right now, and will have the choice to upgrade to 64 XP later on.

So that saves on the OS. One question...I noticed that the Mboard takes DDR2-1066 memory and the memory you linked was DDR2-800. Will that make a diff?

It'll work w/ any DDR2 memory from DDR2-667 to DDR2-1066 ...
http://ca.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=534&l4=0&model=1655&modelmenu=2

4 x DIMM, max. 8GB, DDR2 1066*/800 / 667 MHz, non-ECC, un-buffered memory
If you already have the OS, bump up the CPU to the Q6600 to make up the difference ...

Me and you can have computer fights...even though I *****ed out and bought a pre made one. It sure is nice and does every thing I will ever need from it.
continued....

for two years then it will be outdated and i will have to replace everything instead of just upgrading each component seperately as technology progresses and money permits

Sweet. Im going to take all the info in and make a final decision this friday //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

You have good or bad experience from New Egg? Everyone says they are worth buying from. My reason for asking is I still get a good discount from CompUSA and since they are going out of business its even better. The downside is that there is no returns...

If he wants to spend another $800 every 2 years instead of $800 over a two year span so be it.

I ordered my PS/Case and HD from newegg yesterday afternoon, got tracking info within a few hours and it is here already today! That is what I call service //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Just got done building the box myself I am on now, I could not figure out if I want to go Vista 32 or 64 bit yet so I am just running XP for now until I figure out of there will be any issues with my other software. Just installed SP2 now and hoping to play some COD4 within the next hour or so //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

One thing I did notice is when installing XP it could only see like 130GB or so of the 500GB drive, not sure what the issue is but maybe something in SP2 will fix? I know Vista has support for large drives so it will work at some point.

Just so you know this Antec PS is SUPER QUIET, the whole combo in general with the CPU fan, 3 case fans and PS fan running is dead silent about 2' away from me, only time I here a little peep is when booting and the HD is loading or if I run something off the DVD drive.

i absolutely love newegg!! Plus.... being that one warehouse is in memphis... majority of my stuff comes from there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif and its only 1 day shipping! Only things i've had to get from cali warehouse was old 7600gt and my antec nine hundred case... so, yes, FAST SHIPPING!
