D Class amp bad for subs ?

Too much power resulting in clipping= distortion. Right?
so - distortion is the primary killer in subs.

Ed
Since you brought this back from the dead to post that, I will atleast take the liberty of correcting you.

Distortion nor clipping kills speakers. The speaker doesn't care if the signal is clipped or not, or distorted or not. If distortion killed speakers, then our speakers would blow every time a guitarist used the distortion peddle.

The only two ways to kill a speaker are:

1) to exceed the speakers thermal limits

2) to exceed the speakers mechanical limits.

Send a fully clipped signal to a speaker, and as long as neither of the two previous requirements happen (thermal or mechanical failure), the speaker will be perfectly fine. Power kills speakers, not clipping or distortion.

yea, the reason why people blow subs when they are clipping is because the amp usually produces twice the power at clipping stages. this is when the sub starts to sweat (or burn ^_^ )

clipping is not really too audible. sometimes you can hear it, but it produces more power at a reduced clarity.

distortion is just static. what people have been saying about distortion is like saying "distortion or snow on your tv will break it, so turn it off quick" rofl. it just makes it sound bad. as long as the amp - as squeak said - is within its thermal and mechanical limits, you can play as much clipped distortion as you want.

you might cringe and grind your teeth when you listen. but it will work so long as your battery\alternator run and your gas tank is full =)

a/b amps , get overheated faster than D amps , (or am i wrong ??)
A/B are less efficient than D, so yes, they will probaly run a little hotter. But the designers aren't stupid, they take that into account when designing the heat dissipation aspect of the amp (board layout, heatsink design, etc). An A/B isn't any more prone to shut down due to thermal problems than a D is.

So short answer is no, you don't have to worry about a class A/B overheating.

i never had a prob w/ my memphis class d. i ran it on the same sub for 2 years never hurt it. it was a memphis 1000, i disagree w/ what oen guy said about distortion not blowing speakers, distortion is what blows speakers, u can run 1000w on a 200w speaker as long as it isnt distorted, but since ur runnin more power it will distort the speaker which is the only reason more power distorts speakers.

lol, man i didnt take the time to look at how old this thread was too. I read every single post up until now, and i noticed Bumpin Blazer posted, i was like dang Adam is back around here....Then i ran into how you guys were saying this thread was old.....Oh well, good lil debate.

Jmac, 2 years later did that sub blow? lol

LOL.......sorry, but you are severely mistaken. If distortion killed speakers, then everytime a guitarist used the distortion peddle your speakers would blow. The speaker "distorts" because it is being pushed beyond it's limits because of the amount of power being sent to it. Hence, the amount of power pushes the speaker beyond either it's 1) thermal limits, or 2) it's mechanical limits. You can send a fully clipped (i.e. severely distorted) signal to a speaker, and as long as the speaker doesn't reach it's thermal or mechanical limits the speaker will be 100% fine.

But you can go ahead and try to send an "undistorted" true 1000w to a 200w sub......let us know what happens.............

well i wont mention the name of the place i got my info from but they have to kno what they r talking about... i mean they have a typhoon hittin 172 off the dash w/ 6 hcca's. they need to get some newer subs tho.
