Build a custom PC while you can. The days of endless options for the enthusiast are near. First apple goes x86, the ati is bought by AMD and now rumor of nVidis being bought by Intel. Choices will be come slim and very strict standards will be set if this comes true. Research advancements will slow down and me-too oems will be abundant. Just like any market(yes like car audio) this progression happens. Big fish buy all indepents in similiar markets and proprietary evolvement becomes inevitable.

So true, I guess the best part about that whole situation is I am a fan of both AMD & ATi, so it worked out for me...lol

Holy crap im not reading all of that. Anyway i was just gonna throw my 2 cents in on hardware recs. I just built my buddy a 165 Opty (stock 1.8ghz dual core) on a DFI SLI-DR with the new zalman air cooler. Bumped (if you could call it that) from 1.8 to 2.8 PRIME STABLE!!! I've hit 3ghz benchable with mine on an el cheapo water kit. For the money its unbeatable. He matched me (2x 7800gts) with a single 7900gt (OCed) at 123,XXX on Aquamark III.

some of the first gen opty 165's had amazing overclocking abilities, my buddy happened to snag one of those and has his around 2.8 core stable as well.

Now that the 8 series cards are out I'm hoping prices drop a lot on the higher end 7 cards.

Get yourself an e6600 with a zalman 9700 cooler, a 680i motherboard, and a eVGA 8800GTX. You'll be good to go.
