Well, Joe expressed to me that he does not plan on doing any gaming on his computer & just wanted it to be fast. With that in mind I figured a high resource speed demon would be the best solution for his needs. Keeping in mind he had a budget, like most of us, I decided the most efficient way to spend the money would be on the RAM. Adding a surplus of high quality RAM will be the best way to ensure a long lifespan on the computer, while also enabling it to run at top speed. With that in mind I am currently hunting a great deal on the RAM in various places, but here is the initial build we looked at.
AMD Opteron 144 overclocked to 2.5+Ghz - for anyone who knows about processors, an AMD64 chip running at this speed would be similar to a P$ 3.6+Ghz, and that is smoking fast. If I can get a good deal on a faster stock Opteron, it will be all the better.
WD Raptor 74gb 10k rpm hard drive - for the uninitiated it may come as a shock that the hard drive is actually the biggest bottleneck in a modern PC. With that in mind we're gonna go with a Raptor, or a similar technology, in order to open up the intake on this engine so to speak.
Obviously the motherboard is always crucial as it serves as the backbone to the entire system. I will be going with one of the stable selections available from several different vendors, with future upgradability & overclocking abilities being the deciding factors, along with price.
The most commonly overlooked piece of hardware is always the power supply. The power supply can make or break the entire PC. There are several great options available, and I will be shopping around for the best bang for the buck on this one.
Anyways, I've rambled on long enough, but if anyone has questions feel free to ask here. I will be updating the thread as I go with the items I end up buying to bring this beast together. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
