crossover hell

LOL
ok I have a set of jl vr crossovers...one of them is not working....can someone tell me which pieces and also how to wire them that I need to make it work at the flat (0 db) setting? I think some of the connections on the board are bad and I want to just pull them off the board and twist them together...help I am in broken crossover hell

Are you kidding me? that is the craziest thing I've ever heard someone say. Other than that my only experience fixing crossovers is replacing resistors. Take a DMM to the resistors test them all and see if any are blown. It should say on them what the resistance should be or they will be color coded.

ha ha...don't know why I'm so crazy...I think the connections on the board are bad and I want to just pull off the parts and connect them without using the board...kind of a pain in the *** i'm sure but I did test the resistors and they seemed to have continunity but I'm not sure I had the dmm on the right setting.

umm, pics?
replace parts till it works?

do neither outputs work?
ya I will send pics...I am at work right now...might be able to take them tonight...I tried removing the polyswitch but that seemed to make it worse...no the woofer out is fine but I think it doesnt get filtered anyways so ya I will get the pics as soon as I can...

Ok here's some pics...I don't know how if you can read them

Dcfc0069.jpg

the top coil is 0.3 mH

the cap on the left(yellow) is 4.0 uF 100v 5%

The cap in the middle (also yellow) is 4.7 uF 100v 5%

the big resistor is 10w 1 ohm 4J

the middle resistor is 5w 1ohm 1J

the bottom resistor is 5w 1ohm 4J

the coil on the lower left is 0.08mH

there is also a 3 position level switch (0, -1.5 0r -3dB) below the bottom resistor

I removed the polyswitch but it goes to the right of the cap in the middle.

I also resoldered the lower coil...one side had become detatched from the board, my friend gave me a hand resoldering it...could we have toasted some of the other components when resoldering? my friend tested it with his dmm and said he thought it would work but it didn't obviously...

This is the last thing I need finish my system and of course its going to be a fvcking biehcchaz to get it going...

.

Ask Kicker's customer service if they can provide you with a schematic of them. That'd help a whole lot figuring out what's broke. The chances of the board itself being the problem are really slim.

a schematic for a device with 8 components isn't exactly going to help much... :p
yeah they are jl speakers so I doubt they would give up the schematic anyways...

I do believe the tweeter is using those three resistors, and one of the capacitors, and one of the inductors... don't ask me which one, as I the pic isn't clear enough :p
but, none of those parts are at all likely to fail, and it wouldnt be using all the resistors, as these are used to set the 0dB, -1.5dB, and -3dB settings of the tweeter... (which are seleted by the switch)

yeah thats what I thought and yes they are selected by a switch...

are you sure the tweeter works? :p
yes I tried it on the other crossover...I also checked the wiring by using another speaker and it was fine

yeah I'm working on that...sucks tho I cant buy just the crossovers retail I have to go through egay.I still think it's the board that is the problem but I don't know exactly which parts to use to make it work right...I tried getting some crossover calculators and guessing the cut but it doesn't come out with the values I have on the crossover parts....

if you friend owns a soldering iron and a dmm... i come to believe he at least knows the basics of electronics... why don't you bust out the DMM and ohm them fukers... each and every single last grizzly piece (like stated - only 8)

ok so my buddy tested the crossover and said it's the large resistor....so where can I buy a 10w 1ohm 5% tolerance resistor, retail? there were also some other markings on the resistors that neither of us understood they were 4j on the large resistor and 1j and 4j on the smaller resistors. anyone know what those mean? never seen them before thought maybe it was jl specific or something...
