Crossover Frequency and slope

The slope is simply how steep the curve of the crossover is - 12dB/octave means that after an octave (doubling the frequency), the signal is attenuated by 12dB. 18dB/octave would be attenuated by 18dB after an octave, and so on...

 
its like different gear ratios in a car gearbox. they have to be set right or you get bad performance.

do some reading on car audio forums.
