Crossover distance from speakers

I am going to be installing my first set of components, some older Alpine type X's which have quite large crossovers. I am not sure if they will fit in my doors so I may need to mount them elsewhere in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Is it recommended that I keep them as close as possible to the speakers? It would probably look cleanest if I installed them under the rear seat next to the amp that powers them.

Also, speaking of distances, is it best to mount the tweeter as close as possible to the woofer? Is this the case even in a vehicle like mine where the woofer is at the bottom of the door?

Thanks for any advice.

from a SQ standpoint, I've always heard that its best to have the tweeter as close to the woofer as possible... Not sure about the distance from the crossover although I'm sure it doesn't matter.
