A coaxial is a single speaker unit. Generally they include a built in tweeter and crossover (2-way speaker). A component set is a combination of speakers and crossover. Generally component sets sound better than their coaxial counterparts. And you put them in the same spot, only in a component set you generally seperate the tweeter slightly.

Also usually components will usually sound better than their coaxial counterparts due to the higher crossover slopes and greater research that goes into the designing of components.

Also the fact since the cone doesn't have a nice big hole in it, it does not distort as much and can handle more power.

Oh yes never thought about it but having a closed dustcap might add to the rigidity of the cone which would reduce distortion at high volumes from cone breakup.

Yeah the dustcap certainly helps with rigidity... I wonder how a coax speaker would sound if it had something similar to dustcap but a hole in the middle for the tweeter. I guess it still wouldn't move quite as much air due to that hole and also some of the sound waves would deflect off the tweeter so if nothing else you'd be losing a little volume.

So if the component versions of a 6.5 are much better, would you do a 3 way or buy 2 2 way component sets for say a suv?

well most people do buy the 2 way components. but if you do have enough money and install time i would say the 3 way comps would be well worth it. in the 3 way u have the mid-bass, midrange and tweeter.

i just got a 2 way comps and i have a jeep grand cherokee.
