Couple questions

Ok, just picked up some HT gear for uber cheap (got a Fluance SXHTB system and an Onkyo 505 for $250 total).

I have 3 sources on my current system- HD cable box hooked up via HDMI, SD DVD player hooked up via component, and Xbox360 hooked up via component.

What's the benefit of using the HDMI passthrough from my cable box to the receiver? Couldn't I just run optical from the box to the receiver and leave the HDMI how it is?

The receiver has 2 opticals, so I guess I could run the cable box with HDMI, and the dvd player/xbox through optical audio, correct?

There would be zero benefit for running the hdmi to the receiver...mainly because that receiver wont process the audio portio of the hdmi connection. It'll simply pass through the video. Run HDMI to TV and optical or DigCoax to the receiver.

For the best connection potential running directly to the display is always the best bet.

Also, use Coax over Optical. Coax is the signal. Optical is the signal after being run through a converted to become light then deconverted back into electrical signal. Skip the extra process.
