Comp. Speaker Recommendation

Hey guys, need some of your suggestions for the best 6.5" comp speakers out there under $800, 1k tops. Right now kinda leaning to the focal 165K2P or POLK SR6500. But Im still new on these audio stuff, so there are probably many more decent brand out there that Ive never heard of. So, please any input?

Thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

Look into: Seas Lotus Reference Comps, DLS Iridium, Dynaudio. I've listened to all three and you can't go wrong with either. I believe the Seas Lotus Reference Set can be had for $750 at mobilesq.com but right now they have 10% off so whatever 10% of 750 is you can get a nice set.

The DLS Iridiums are 3-way component, Im looking for the 2 ways to replace my stock speakers. Are the DLS Ultimate Nobeliums as good as the iridiums series?

as stated before the iridiums come in 2 way as well. Nobeliums just came out like a couple of months ago and not too many people have it (actually i don't know anyone who has it) so i can't say anything about that set. The iridiums are nice though. maybe that set is perfect for you because the iridiums are really detailed but very warm sounding set. very nice.

If you are a true Jazz/Bluegrass fan, then that would lead me to believe that you know what Jazz instruments really sound like in real life. The range of sax (alto/tenor/soprano/bari- just the common 4 of 14 varities) and the realistic raw edge of the trumpet and clarinet, the low piano notes and the body of the organ...not even putting a dent into it..

I feel Morel, Dynaudio, and DLS 2way offerings will come up short in the percussion realism aspect. Their midrange sounds like theres a wet towel over the speaker and the poly cone sound is uninviting and its plasticky sounding in reproducing the kick of the drums. This is not taking into account the amount of juice you need to push through these to get good sound. I feel they sound nice, enjoyable listen but I want to listen to the emotion and dynamic unbalance in the music, not just some elevetor music type reproduction that will put me to sleep because it hinders the sense of realism enbedded in these very colorful sounding instruments.

The 3ways are a vast improvement simply by the addition of the dome midranges, allowing more volume and greater separation/detail in each dedicated range.

I'd recommend looking into the Rainbow Profi Phase plugs and Seas Lotus Reference....excellent 2way sets that will deliver SQ wise from the 80hz up range with lil' equal in their price range. Superb midrange and effortless high freq extension with as natural a midbass sound you can find.

My .02 cents

I say this is a job for a rigid midrange... Seas Lotus, or go active with Seas L or W series, Dayton RS (best value -- currently in my car and I love it)... There are a handful of *very* detailed paper cones but it is very very rare to have a poly cone that will create the level of realism I think you are after...

A nice 3 way with a dome midrange would do the trick as well... The dayton RS 4 ohm versions and dome mid are coming out fairly soon btw...

Not to be mean or anything, but there's more to speakers than just what cone material they use. A Dynaudio poly cone has a LOT more technology than meets the eye. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

They are one of the rare exceptions //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif -- I'd be more willing to call that a damped rigid cone though...

Thanks for all the inputs, checkin out the seas lotus rite now.

80INCHES: a focal berilium would be way over my budget. I might be able to afford em, but tht would leave me pennyless to purchase an amp to go with the speakers -_- The utopia be goes for few grands, no?

Just be aware the fabric/silk tweeter on the Reference set is being revised and wont be out for a few months. For a better soft dome tweeter and comparable mid I'd look into the Profi.

I don't have experience with the Lotus Reference set but I do have the Performance set and they're awesome. I've tried out a bunch of different speakers and the Seas have them all beat easily. They're the most detailed and have the best mid/midbass of any speakers I've heard. And from what I've read the reference line is even better.

They have really nice tweets too. They're loud and detailed without being harsh(and I have really sensitive ears).

I get what you are sayin, thats the kind of tweeters Im lookin for. Ive heard the mb quartz q series before, sure the tweeters are detailed, but they are too sharp for my taste. Im lookin for something that is smooth yet crisp.

Btw, I know this might be off topic, but now that you guys're here, what subwoofer would you recommend to supplement my system. I definitely aim for sq not spl. Wouldnt want bass too powerful that it'll drown the speakers. So far Ive been asking around and the reply would almost be the same: JL audio. However, IMO, though JL is powerful, it is not smooth enough for my taste. Anyone recommend high-end sq subwoofers that match well with the comp. mentioned before?
