Im willing to bet that the car has a factory amp. Quick search in the Metra database confirms that a factory amplifier was an option on a 2001 mitsu Montero sport.
Sounds like 2 things...
either your fried the amp with the new speakers...possibly because the old ones had an odd impedance maybe 8ohms or higher.
OR
The signal coming from the amplifer is has been processed by some on board processing unit and its for lack of a better term a signal that cannot be used by an aftermarket speaker...Had this happen with an 02 eclipse spyder.
either one of these senarios puts you up shit creek. Because there is nothing you can do short of installing a new deck.
All of the above is assuming the factory deck is still installed...if not. Disreguard, and there is aproblem that no one on this forum can help you with...just something you will have to troubleshoot on your own.
