Deck failing to power up

Hello everyone,

My sister just bought a brand new Kenwood 6019 when her previous stereo supposively failed. She explained that the stereo kept going on and off when eventually it went off and would go on no more. She went to a car audio shop who tested all the fuses and was convinced that it was in fact the deck's power which had failed - it was with this she bought the Kenwood deck.

Now I wired up the deck by simply twisting the wires and bounding them with electrical tape (inefficient, but I mostly wanted to see if it was working properly). When the deck is connected to the car harness it fails to boot up, which is where I am at now. I am wondering if anyone here can think of why the deck would not be starting, do you think maybe it's something related to the car being broken, or is it the deck being connected properly?

To be more specific on the decks wiring setup I essentially connected everything to like colors (ensuring the wire purpose was the same) red to red, whiteblack to whiteblack, etc.. The only things I wasn't entirely sure about was the car's wiring harness had 3 ground wires and the deck had one, all of which I bounded together. The second thing which confused me was that the car's wiring harness had two yellow wires (positive 12V) which I connected to the decks 1 yellow wire.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

BTW the car is a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora.

yeah definitely no point of having 3 ground wires hooked up to one and two 12v wires hooked up to one, that makes no sense at all. Use just one of each, if you can, use a meter and make sure your getting 12v out of the power wire and the ground is a true ground.

That's a weird wiring scheme to have so many grounds and +12V. Use a DMM to measure the voltage on each of those wires compared to ground and then just use one of them. If they are all the same, just use one of each. Use heatshrink or electrical tape to close off the other wires.

How are the speaker connections? Are they original speakers?

I installed a Pioneer deck on my dad's car and one of the speaker connections was loose and came off at the speaker and touched ground when the car was driven. This would cause the radio to shut off immediately.

I believe that sometimes there is 2 power wires leading to the radios, one for power while car is on, and the other for the memory on the radio, which is a constant supply of a very little ammount of juice, so maybe you dont need to connect both of those wires to your new deck and im betting you connected something wrong.

I just wanted to update everyone since you took the time to post. The next day when I got a 12V meter to measure the equipotential it did show that ONLY the power to the car wiring harness was dead, all the rest of it was intact - which is pretty odd. After wiring the batter directly to the car's harness we were able to get the stereo working.

Thanks so much for everyones posts!

Maybe change out the Wiring harness? Sometimes the wiring harness could go bad .. i just changed mine out to see if it was the culprit to my cd player not working .. but no luck ..//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif but doesn't matter to me much .. got the wiring harness for $1.08 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
