cheapest way to add time delay? any ideas?

This makes no sense. This will negatively alter the recordings.

a ~20msec delay to the rear signal in order to cause a perceived delay giving the impression of a larger concert hall venue environment.
Why are you adding reverb and "echo" to the sound? That's bad. Intentionally adding coloration? You are altering the true sound stage and imaging. If the signers voice was recorded dry and tight (on purpose), why are you trying to make it sound like a concert hall? This is like those people who say they "like" the added distortion and "color" of tubes and other crap that intentionally makes it sound worse, not true to the recording.

Adding reflections and room "sound" are NOT going to help the clarity and transparency of the sound. It will alter it, and make it worse. It might be usefull for a special effect, but it will always negatively alter the true recorded sound.

When your speakers get accurate enough, it is the listening environment that becomes the limiting factor. This tactic will make that environment worse, not better.

I want to thank you guys for your input as I think with your help I have found a solution. Especially, KHP for all of his knowledge and input on the subject and RichB for using the word "analog" which made me think outside of the "ainet" box and think in terms of analog and digital. The solution is a $50 ADC to convert my (analog) rca'c coming out of my 650 and going (digital) fiber optic into my 400. Which has 30ms of time delay. Also Sarthos, that minidsp is a great idean I'm glad that u introduced me to that product and that is what I will use if for some reason this fails. And thanks to every1 else that really tried to help.

And lol, on a side note, I just got off of the phone with Matt at image dynamics about his xs components, for those that don't know he is part owner, engineer and designer of ID, 1 of the best sq speakers made. I did not bring this up which is why its "lol". He asked what type of processor I was using and after I said pxe650 he said..... "Ahhh, that won't be enough delay for rear fill" before I could tell him that I was going to feed into an h400 for rear. Then he said "good, delay the heck out of them". But then again, what does he know right? I came to "help 101" for help because I do not know everything and I was searching for help which I got but came with allot of bs in between. I did not tell you guys that I was an old pro to brag but as a resume to let you guys know that I knew a thing or 2 about audio and I wasn't askig "why" I was asking "how". You guys seem to be very young but you have got to get out of the mind set that you know more than the next guy if you want to learn anything. Y do you think that most audio enthusiast are young? It is because most never find the real satisfaction of real sound quality. You can take the best speaker in the world with the best amp in the world which will sound ok at first but if its not tuned right you will have a headache in just a few minutes. Its not about being loud but about reproducing great clean sound. Don't worry you probably won't hear from me again, from my experience this forum is not welcoming to true sq enthusiasts. But thanks to the ones that have helped.

ohh, 1 more thing. For those of you with full range "rear fill" and are curious about this delay you will not get the same results. Rear fill should be mono somewhere in the range of 200hz-3,000hz give or take a little. I would not try this with full range. I'm not trying to be a know it all because I don't, I'm simply just trying to help any1 that is curious so that you won't try and be disappointed.

What a waste of money. Stupid way to make it sound worse. Maybe if you tile the inside of your car you can make it sound even more "concert hall".
thanks for sharing your opinion.

my personal opinion is that paring CDT speakers with a HiFonics amp is a waste of money and effort. But you apparently like it, and it works for you. we all have our preferences, and luckily most of us build sound systems for ourselves and not to impress people over the internet that can't even hear them. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

KHA, you're wasting your time and energy. I'm wrong, you're wrong, the maker and inventor of 1 of the best names in car audio is wrong but these hooked on fonics and pioneer coax guys know there stuff. Next time I'm gonna just bypass the acoustic engineers and speaker designers to ask them. They know their *****! and are recognized for their achievements, the college you went to obviously didn't know what they were doing, Infinity gave me free ***** because, well I guess I'm either cute or a nice guy because I don't know ****, or maybe its the shoes, got to be the shoes! And the creater of image dynamics, well he don't know ***** either. Maybe we'll figure it out 1 day.

Can you explain why? I thought it was the best combo of quality for the money at the time. I built this system on a very limited budget. It sounds better than many systems that cost alot more. It's all there. The nx880 is a BIG four channel amp with a good x-over section. I got for a good price. CDT's were the forum boner back then. Then there is the classic Denford 8250 at the heart of it all. I'd like to see a better

At work I have very expensive sound gear. I would tell you, but you would just drool and be jealous.

lol, well, my dad has 1 better than yours. Where do you work at? a skating ring?

Dude I have $6k monitors (that means speakers) in my living room but no one asked and this isn't a pissing match. This was a question of how to do something and it turned into ignorant comments from guys that have no idea of what they're talking about and yes I said ignorant because you are commenting on something that you have no experience in but yet you have an opinion. I'm sure that this form has some knowledgable people in it but diymobileaudio is where you can find info on sq if anyone really wants sq help or advice. Just don't go in there like you are in here because they will eat you alive. btw, my rear fill reflecting off of the glass will be just like tile, thanks for the suggestion.

You still can't answer why you're intentionally altering the source sound. That's retarded.

If you want to measure dick size.

I'm a pro audio engineer for a $120 million concert hall with over $2 million in sound gear.

In the morning I'll be FOH engineer for Brandi Carlile concert and live recording for Sony, on 3 Soundcraft Vi6 systems, Sony Live Remote Recording Truck, L'Acoustic line array's and MONITORS, D&B subs, neumans, scheopes, dpa, earthworks, b&k mics, millenium and studer preamps, two sold out shows for 5k people. I will run a crew of 8 union audio engineers and 12 union stagehands. http://www.seattlesymphony.org/symphony/buy/single/production.aspx?id=9942&src=t&dateid=9942

What are you going to do tomorrow?

sorry, I shouldn't knock your equip and I'm strapped for cash as much as the next guy. But the bottom line is that it is very ignorant and obnoxious to knock something that you know nothing about and in the way that you did it. If you research it you will find that it is a real and widely used method in the sq world. If you decide one day to try it then you can comment intelligently pro or con but not the way that you did to this thread because quite simply it makes you look like a joke. It was wrong of me to knock your equipment and I have to admit I know nothing about it so I did the same thing that you did. and why do I want to allter it you asked? Because that is the way I like it.

No, I just choose not to spend more than $1k on my car system. I also drive a POS used car that rivals the value of the sound system. I built a new house with a view of the ocean with a reasonalbe mortage I can afford. Priorities. I have nice gear at work, my drive home just needs to sound decent.

but yet your strapped for cash to buy quality equip, doesn't make sense to me.
It is unwise to make judgements about someones knowledge based on how much they spend on car audio.
