Can you run over rms?

there's no way of knowing exactly how much power a sub will take without blowing....the only way to be safe is to feed it just enough *CLEAN* (meaning unclipped and undistorted) power to make it sound good to your ears. I always suggest that you buy the most powerful name-brand amp you can afford, and just adjust the gains to suit your needs. My philosophy is amp first, sub second. Make your sub match your amp, not the other way around.

Ok f*** face listen up I HAVE PERSONALLY BLOWN A SUB UNDERPOWERING FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME YOU IDIOT. ALPINE TYPE R's HAVE TAKEN UP TO A 2200watt burst of power and not blown AS ANY PERSON LIKE RANGERMAN OR JMAC OR WHOEVER THEY WILL TELLL YOU TOO UNDERPOWERING WAY WORSE. I PUT 600 WATTS to 2 JL10WO's AND IT DIDNT TOUCH THEM SO SHUT UP YOU FREAKIN IDIOT PULL YOUR HEAD OUT YA ***.

well what do you recommend than mr know it all
No one in here claims to be Mr. Know-It-All - he was simply stating facts, while other people were stating things that weren't true. Anyways, here are some suggestions:

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=soupic2600

http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/PHORTI6002

http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/USAUSX800D

I'd personally go for SoundStream, US Acoustics, or Phoenix Gold......you definitely shouldn't send the subs more than 325RMS each

please read that. Jmac and Rangerman both seem to be disputing the opinion you so ritiously claim they would back you up on.

you're not going to always put 600 watts on the JL's unless the headunit is sending full preout voltage and the amp is getting a full 14.4volts. without reaching the limits of the voice coil or the suspension, underpowering will not kill a sub. but if you have blown many subs by underpowering them, then i don't think you should even have subs, don't flame me for that though. if you have, then most likely its because you reached the limits of their suspension or the box design was incorrect.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well I already flamed you sorry. Anyway the box was sealed completely and it didnt hurt them I said 600 watts because I had my amp at full power wich should be 800 and I know that it cant run 800 all the time. Why did in a enclosed box perfect specs for a type R did the sub clip I only ran 200 watts into it and at NO volume did it sound even decent it pushed the sub WAY passed it perimiters and sound like crap. Answer me that please sorry for the flame my anger is passed I guess I really did sound like a jackass.:p

Sorry i was a bit harsh with ya at first....i just hate to see people giving out inaccurate advice that other people might take to heart. Just make sure in the future that you are absolutely sure about something before you go ranting about it....will save you a lot of face in the longrun.

My guess is that your box was either too big or too small, and that you had the gains up way too far on your amp. When an amp goes into clipping it sends a square wave form to the sub instead of the usual round shape the sub is accustomed to. These square waves carry more power potential than their round counterpart and will make the sub reach it's thermal limits very quickly....why they carry more power, i don't know....but that's how it's been explained to me numerous times. A poorly designed box will also cause a sub to do weird things, one of which is decreasing the amount of power the sub is able to take before it starts burning itself up.

Actually, I'll tell you the opposite...overpowering is worse. Thanks for including my name though. I feel kinda loved:D

Why on earth would you think that stretching a rubber band 1" is worse than trying to stretch it 20 ft? That's kind of the analogy you could use here..

When you have your volume knob down on your stereo you are sending LESS power to the speakers than when it's turned up.. more power means more movement means more loud.. so, you are implying that playing your radio at low volumes will HURT it.. On the other side, you say that shoving a 450 lb bowling ball up your arse is better than stuffing a marble in there (claiming it's better to 'overdrive' the speakers).. Personally, if something had to go there I'd rather a marble.. just me..

RMS is (supposedly) continous power handling.. what it can take as a MAX indefinately (or for long periods of time anyway).. MAX is what it will hold for a VERY SHORT time before all the component parts that make it up decide to go their seperate ways (or melt together as it could be).. If your speakers have an RMS of 500 watts (actual) sending them 600 for more than a very short time will blow them.. sending them 100 watts for a week won't bother them at all..

I have no idea how you managed to blow a sub sending it a LOT less than it's rated power, unless that sub was either defective or way overrated..

I'm actually suprised that people don't get this.. Once someone defines RMS and MAX, it's a straight forward logic problem.. I'm dyslexic and I don't even get it backwards //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Originally posted by alove_85 Just a questions, lets say you have a sub rated at 75-350 rms, 1400 peak. Is it bad to give it 500 rms 1000 peak? Would that blow it? Ive always heard that overpowering is better for the sub than underpowering.
Send it ~351~ watts and see what it does:) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif
