Do most of you use a bass knob or control the subs directly frmo the head unit? If you use a bass controller, how do you set it up?

I have bass control module with my Alpine V12 amps. They are synchronized through the knob, so it's good like that. The controller is mounted near my coin reservoir in my ford explorer. I can see how hot my amps are (in fahrenheit and celsius), control low pass filter, control gain (of course), and a couple other things I don't know how to work. It's a good little thingy.
