Can you run over rms?

Originally posted by alove_85 Just a questions, lets say you have a sub rated at 75-350 rms, 1400 peak. Is it bad to give it 500 rms 1000 peak? Would that blow it? Ive always heard that overpowering is better for the sub than underpowering.
Common myth I believe. I think it's the other way around. It's never good to overpower your sub than to underpower.

I may be wrong...someone will correct me if I am.

eh... not necessarily wrong. all subwoofers are different. what brand/model number are your subwoofers? What brand/model number is your amp? My Alpine Type R's that i had are 300W RMS, butI gave them each over 400W and they did perfectly. In fact, I could've given them more.

Sometimes depending on the enclosure underpowering is worse than overpowering. Like in a sealed inclosure. The rms of an amp can exceed the rms on a sub just not the max power. Rms on a sub is just an indication of where the minimum amount of power can be supplied. Rms on an amp is just the minimum amount of power an amp will deliver. Like on my Alpine's I have 600watt rms on my amp and 300watt rms on the subs. These subs are hardly broke in an sound great im not stressing them at all because my amp only push 800 watts max 200 under the Type R's maximum rating so I'm sure your gonna be fine.

i have two infinity perfect 12s. cheap 2000 watta legacy amp, so thats 1000rms each but its legacy so probably more like 400 rms lol. I could be wrong too about overpowering is better but thats just what a crutchfield technician told me.

legacy... how embarrassing. Use it as a door stop and get a new amp. My guess is that it wouldn't even put out the 400 that you guess it would. And it's rated as a 2000W max amp, not a 2000W rms.

sorry about that, i meant 1000 rms total not each channel, but yeah about crutchfield. I'm not dumb enough to order from them because there so expensive. I just talk to their technicians and advisors. you have to be a previous customer to get advice from them but hey i ordered grill covers from them haha.

My first amp was a Legacy LA360 supposed to put out 300 watts bridged. It be lucky to put out 75 bridged only had a 15amp fuse. WASTE OF MONEY. But for a first thats ok At least your headed in the right direction with Subs. I heard they were nice.

yeah. The legacy was like 50 on ebay until i can get myself a nicer amp, what is a good cheap brand thats like 1000 watts total rms? The subs are really nice. Really low too, down to 18 i believe

RMS total? RMS = continuous wattage. Max = what it will burp to. The amp will burp to 2000W (or so it says). It really won't. The RMS on that amp is not 1000W. No way in hell.

holy shit....where do i start?

Underpowering is never wose than overpowering. EVER!

The power rating on any given sub is a bullshit number they give you as a general guideline as to how much power the sub can take for an extended period of time and so on and so forth. (how many times am i going to have to say this?)

The RMS isn't the minimum power an amp puts out. It's the most power it can put out in a constant even flow for a short period of time under given circumstances.

Please know what you're talking about before you give other people advice. It makes the world a better place to live in.
