Not getting a harness made for the vehicle might cause stuff like the radio not to turn off when car is shut off or the stock system to not even work. I tried it in my silverado and ran into problem trying to rig it. It's even more important if you have the gm Bose system in the car.

The only colors meant to match are the ones in the aftermarket harness, to the wiring on your radio harness. The vehicle side WILL be different. Theoretically speaking you could just run the switched power of your radio (red) to a fused 12v source that is only on when the vehicle is on. Aside from that, you only need the primary wiring. Constant 12v (yellow), ground (black), and speaker wiring. There are a number of losses when doing that depending on which GM you have. Anything from warning chimes/indicators, Onstar, signal level control for amplified systems, etc. Honestly if you don't know anything about all of that, it's worth purchasing the correct harness once. The GM radio turned on through data, that module/harness reads that data system and generates switched power through a relay.
