Buying an amp

A direct swap between a VFL 4480 and a VFL 120.1 (both rated at 2200 RMS) showed huge gains. That tells me that the mini amp doesn't do rated @ 1 ohm because a difference of a few hundred watts isn't going to be very audible - but the difference there was huge. Same goes for AudioPipe mini amps, etc. As trumpet said, the largest mini amp you'll find is about 1-1.2k. (unless you count MMATs which has up to a 4000w amp in a relatively small case, but good luck affording one unless it's used)
Do you think maybe that the 120.1 is just really under rated? I feel like AB wouldn't put their name or atleast the VFL name on the amp if it was going to be over rated. Their amps produce what they are rated or more from what I have heard about AB amps (or atleast the VFL's), but once again I have never had one so I do not know. I just want to buy a good amp that will last and is around 2000 watts. When you buy used you are always taking a risk, and the newer amps come with a warranty.

I bought an VFL 4480.1 from mylows, it arrived today. I bought it to replace my mmats dhcx2200.1 Will find out in a few hours how it sounds compared to the mmats!!!!

It is really small!!

From our experience the VFL 4480.1 (and similar) are nice, but not what they are hyped up to be exactly. Price point and performance are not bad at all, but do they do what I would expect from an American Bass product? Nope not really, then again...they are cheap for a reason.

If you do figure out tonight how it sounds, let me know! I am very interested to hear. So far there has been a lot of negativity regarding power output. I am hoping for good results.

again ,most of these guys have not ran this amp.i have for 4 months every day .and was impressed with the out put of them .also i have installed a few locally in trunk builds ,and again they were very loud and the customer was very happy .talk to the 2 guys that i mentioned earlier as well ,get their opinion of these amps.

We have not only sold them to clients, but installed several as well.

I never said the amp was a bad amp, but it is low on power and nothing that I would expect from an AB product.

Indeed, just didn't want my view to be looked over as the OP may have thought we (I) had no experience with the directly is all.

They do rather well, just not what we expect from AB products is all.

yea i agree the korean vfl line does well over rated ,and these so far have been just at or a bit under ratings .non the less a great amp for the money ,and they dont get hot like a lot of the mini amps do ,even at .5 ohms
