Build thoughts

So I decided to get back into car audio. Bought a new car a few years ago and was ok with the stock sound system (15 sonata with nav/dimension audio). Now i am getting a little bass antsy. I decided to finally upgrade the stock 8 sub and add a 12. One surprising this is how flat the mids and highs are for the dimension system, I cannot argue the good enough for me quality of the system overall.

If anyone would like to chime in to let me know their thoughts as it has been a couple years since I have played attention to car audio, it would be appreciated.

With that being said, I have been bargain hunting for good deals and here is what I have come up with:

Sub: Alpine Type-r swr-12d4 wired to 2 ohms in a 1.8 cuft ported box. I did not want to lose too much space in the trunk so kept with a single 12. I managed to pick this up basically new with box for $100. From what I can tell I will be tuned around 42hz. Anyone with more knowledge able to confirm the belva bbx112bk which shows 42hz will be accurate for this?

Amp: originally, i was going compact on an Alpine MRV-M500 (bought one for $60 locally also near new) but decided I should go with an amp that has ssf (most my previous builds were sealed so didn't matter). Decided to give the newer Kenwood a try. Managed to find a deal on the KAC-9106D. Spent just under $150 shipped new.

Wiring and additionals

The factory sub is dvc and I was able to confirm it does play down to at least 35hz (didn't bother testing lower). That said, I plan to take those wires directly to an lc2i converter. I went with knuconcepts kolossus ofc 4 gauge and, despite controversy or whether or not it even help, a tspec v8 cap. It only cost me $25, so why not?

Let me know what you think. Suggestions, comments or opinions welcome. Consider this post more less a confirmation I am on the right track before I start digging into my car for the first time.

I think you got a decent deal on the sub with an enclosure for $100 bucks. Great subs. Its going to need more space and better tuned enclosure to really perform better, more like a 2.0-2.6 cuft enclosure tuned from 32-36 htz..42 is a little high for my taste, and you will have some performance issues on some music, depending on what type of music you listen to.Decaf will prob get you into some trouble playing in the mid 30s you may be OK on a couple or few but not at long periods of time/or even back to back, But just depends on the music you listen too, That Alpine 500 is a little work horse @2 ohms/pretty durable amp/ pretty solid amp for the money. Not sure about the KWood since I havent messed with Kwood since the 90s.The PPI 1000.1 prob would have been a better choice in my opinion as its been proven with test results, and I own and have used and can vouch for.I think you would achieve better results by replacing the HU rather than using the existing and using an LOC, again my opinion and experiencing

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately trunk space is too much of a commodity and this box will be as about as much as I can give. I was originally looking for the ppi p1000. Because they were highly regarded back when I was still paying attention. I was going to order the p1000.1 originally but I figured since I found the Kenwood on a deal I would at least give it an honest try. I haven't really found much bad about their amps.

Replacing my navigation head unit isn't going to be an option. To me that would be the point of wasted money. I have honestly never used a loc and this will be my first time but I guess only I can judge how bad or good it is to me. The way I see it, I can't get worse than what I have now.

I hear ya man.If you could squeeze this enclosure in there that sub would sound and perform so much better for you.You would think 6 htz isnt much, but you could get down into a little better of the 30s if need be a bit better without bottoming out or getting muddy sound as quick for a prefab, not very expensive.I bought a sub/12" that came with this enclosure and it does well (XFL DVC2ohm) on the PPI 1000.1 I use when changing out and working on my system as back up for bass
