Bought a home theater sub from best buy. Hate it. Can I return it for that reason???

I used MDF and just carpeted it, because it sits behind my couch. I didn't use batting at all because my sub hits just shy of it's x-max with the size of my enclosure and the wattage that I feed to it.

I've heard the 12" Klipsch sub you are wanting to get. They're O.K. for the average consumer, but you'll be wasting your $400+ dollars.
My 12" GTO in a large, low tuned enclosure sounds better, gets lower, and gets much louder than the Klipsch ever could... off less power.

The entire GTO setup only cost me about $150 to put together.

EDIT - glad to see you're trying DIY!
Thanks bro. Yea I'm gonna try it out and see how it works. I'll hopefully get a build log going in a week or 2. But yea the klipsch is pretty nice especially compared to what I have and I do realize that it's just about 150 bucks worth of electronics and 350 in the name. Should have known that through all the Internet subs I have owned there is much better out there for much less.

And to everyone else. I know there are a ton of critics in here which almost makes it hard to believe how many pplare recomending a home sub off parts express. Are these Dayton drivers really that good? And I was already looking at the Dayton titanic 12. For 179 I belieeve And hopefully I'll be able to pick up a nice 400-500 watt plate amp for less than 200 and get the thing fine for right around 400 total. Any other subs or amp suggestions?

If it's the Klipsch 10" I'm thinking of (copper cone?) then it is a great driver. That 10" will get loud enough to shake your house and get seriously low.

Flip is using a dayton sub and loves it. Many people have used their drivers in home audio projects. Most of their products are respectable.

Long story short. I bought a ht setup on a budget and I love everything except the sub.
Receiver-pioneer vsx-819h

Fronts- Polk tsi 300

center-Polk cs 10

rear surround-Polk t-15

sub-Polk psw 10

using monster speaker wire and sub line ( had to do it even tho I can't stand monsters price only paid 50 for both tho)

now the sub I wanted was the klipsch 12. It was $479. They didn't have it. So I said check for the klipsch 10 ($399) Didn't have it. So I got the Polk ($199). Andits terrible. Rattles, port noise like crazy. And most of all can't hit lows for shit!!! Either bottoms out, all you hear is port or you hear nothing cuz it just can't produce the sound.

So my question is. Is there a way to return it if I'm completly unsatisfied. Or should I tell them the truth about the sound, port noise etc. If u can only get instore credit that's fine. I'll get the klipsch 10 or 12 when I get some extra cash. If not I'm sure someone in here knows where I can get a great quality sub for around 400..??
Yes.

Do it. Tell them you hate it you want to return it.

**** I buy shit knowing full well i'm just going to return it 29 days later.

It's my revenge for them over charging for shitty consumer electronics.

For $400 you can get A LOT.. go to a real home audio shop.. Best buy sells CRAP.

hope im not hijacking the thread

but i am very interested in learning how to make my own home theater sub..

I m wondering if it would be ok to just replace the sub from 5.1 home theater system from sony say like S3360 since it got 3 hdmi inputs.. I would like to replace the subwoofer with my own one.. is that even possible? and would the power from the receiver be enough? or i would have to purchase a separate amp for the sub?

also do you guys put the plate amp on the sub box itself or what?

just trying to learn here and would love to make one in near future

also how do i determine which receiver is a good one or not? other than hdmi input/output and its features..

do i look at its power- how much can it handle or anything like that?

Well, how much do you have to spend on one? A lot of the cheaper ones may be rated for 100x7 but when measured to get that rating was only 1 channel driven and with all 7 channels driven the power output can drop in half. Good brands to look at are Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, Marantz.

I see, what about the receiver that this OP got? It is close to 300 bucks which is not too bad to me.. so would that receiver be powerful enough to drive 5 channels of speakers? and then the subwoofer would have its own plate amp?

but then I would have to get rear and front surround speakers.. I have no idea when it comes to this kind of thing, which one is good n all that..

I just checked amazon out and seems like those surround speakers might be a bit pricey?

Would it make sense if I said I am looking at about 1k bucks to piece together a nice HT system?

Everything I bought in my first post cost me 1200 including wires and the sub RCA. I love the pioneer receiver decodes Dolby tru HD and dts master audio. Has hookups for mu I phone and matches my speakers perfectly. Any higher end speakers that need more power would need a better power supply. But this works excellent for my 5.1. I bought all seperates by Polk and just pieced it together. Love it all actually. Even the sub sounds better now that I threw it behind my tv. Less port noise and a good rolloff on the back wall.

As for adding a new sub to a complete setup. I wouldn't do it. Not really meant for that I'm assumng
