Bought a home theater sub from best buy. Hate it. Can I return it for that reason???

I would like to try to build my own , but unlike a car design and buildthis seems like there's more to it. That might be fun to try at least. And to whoever said svs subs that's what I was thinking

as far as the sub getting loud for the other guys that own or have owned it, that's not the issue. It does get pretty loud especially for what itis. It's the quality of it while watching a movie. It just can't hit the low (movie ) tracksHell this thing bottoms out while I'm playing tiger woods 2010 ( which is a badass surround game btw ) if it could just be more of a ht sub instead of a car sub I would be happy. But I think the frequency reaponse is somewhere around 35+ h which just won't cut it for ht

Just a different environment to build for. If you want low do sealed or really low tuned enclosure. over

You can either get a nice rack amp or a plate amp. My dayton 1000 watt plate does good work. However, I wouldn't use car audio drivers that are geared toward SPL in cars, especially when concentrating on getting low for movie effects.

Here is what I used:

12" sub

powered with:

Plate amp

Built a ported enclosure

Total volume: 3.249 ft3

Tuned to: 18 Hz

Have about 200.00 into the whole thing and very happy with the results.

Definitly DIY for the win.

Thanks for the advice and links guys. Few questions. Do you still use mdf? And if so what's the best way to get a nice gloss paint in it. Actually what kind. And do you use anything in the inside of the box? I heard something about eggshell carton foam. ..??

Sure.

A glossy finish is a bear to do, especially if you don't have a lot of experience with it.

You can use filler. I personally don't even use an enclosure lol. Mine is an attic IB. Use MDF then finish how you like. Mirror is hard to get but can be achieve. I would personally cover it in either vinyl or wood veneer that matches your other speakers.

I've heard the 12" Klipsch sub you are wanting to get. They're O.K. for the average consumer, but you'll be wasting your $400+ dollars.

My 12" GTO in a large, low tuned enclosure sounds better, gets lower, and gets much louder than the Klipsch ever could... off less power.

The entire GTO setup only cost me about $150 to put together.
