Birch Box Build for 2 SX 12's

Built with Birch plywood... better than MDF/particle board in every aspect, except cost.

Panels all cut

Water seal on the panels - yea, its just about waterproof 8)

No screws, no nails. Gorilla glue with tongue and groove joinery

birchboxdryin.jpg

closeup on the joinery method. Makes for a much much much stronger joint. The tensile strength of the birch + the extra glue surface area makes this about as strong as a joint can possibly get... not to mention its held together with gorilla glue, which in itself is extremely strong. Excessive, sure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif The wood itself will break before the joint... which is probably 5000x what any sub could ever do to this box... hell you could probably run it over with a suburban and have the subs bumpin the whole time.... possible vid idea???? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

before carpet - metallic blue baffle

Note the ports are countersunk. They will be painted the same metallic blue as the baffle shortly. Top notch carpet - you could literally walk on this box... not the cheapy stuff you normally see on boxes, its real carpet.

The box weighs a wopping 45lbs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif . This is a 5.25 cube box!!! Birch is just that light, and that strong... superb material!

Comments/suggestions?

Bet ya the prices aren't going to be nice..........
What will these be going for now, $400 - $500 shipped?
nope, not quite! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

So what do ya think of it?

It pretty much uses the best of everything.

Sounds like a good build...but why gorilla glue that forms a mechanical bond, why not use Titebond or Elmers Pro bond that uses a chemical bond....and Gorilla glue expands, might fvck with the alignment. Anyways good lucking box, but not my cup of tea, give me a plain old black carpeted box with a black slot port or black aero ports.

Well I'm gonna go against the crowd here and say that it looks good. Much better construction methods from your previous enclosures that I've seen. Should last much longer and be less resonant as well. Would still like to see some bracing inside though but other than that I'm impressed. I like the contrast between the carpet and the paint, nice touch. Thank you for ditching the particle board.

How much did materials cost for that? Less than $100? I'm curious...
less than 100, i wish.. lol.

Took me most of this week to get it to the point its at now... alot of waiting on stuff to dry, a ton of work.

Not to mention, its a loud design to start //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I did some testing with pboard, MDF, and the birch... the birch spanked both in every aspect. Pboard was still stiffer than MDF, and held screws better... but nothing holds screws like the birch!

No bracing needed with this box, not at all. Its extremely stiff already... and bracing is quiet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Lets just say the warranty reflects the lifetime this box will last //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Btw, as far as the glue goes... its a combination of titebond and gorilla glue. Titebond is painted on the tongue, and in the groove, and gorilla glue is placed in a few choice areas to help fill and bond any gaps that would otherwise be impossible to get to. With the design and construction of this box, air leaks are literally impossible.

What do I think?I'll give you this much.I think it looks fantastic.

It really does look like a nice box.I like the blue/black/silver look though.IMO it looks better than if the ports matched the front.

IMO too I love silver and blue... you can't go wrong with that combo. I've emailed the customer, we'll see what he wants to do.
