The MB Quart RLP shallows are sexy as hell. ...Then I bought some...They ******. Horribly. I tried it with 250rms in .2 sealed and .6 sealed. Both has literally no output. You couldnt hear nor feel any bass or even a quick punch. It was the most absolutely pathetic thing Ive ever seen. I tried a Selenium 6" mid in the same box (rebaffled it to fit a 6" and played it on the sub channel) and the Selenium was honestly a hair louder (aka had enough output to even hear anything) on a couple frequencies.
Thats kinda odd. I guess there are mixed opinions out there. I heard two RLP 304's in a sealed box in a Neon and it sounded pretty good and surprisingly loud.

He does know his stuff. Now I know I can't hear a .6db increase. I cant even hear a 2db difference.

What I was referring to, as when I accepted that the RLP's were defeated, is that I forgot that the RLP's only take 300wrms as where the Alpines take twice as much. The .6db difference was in reference to sending the same power to each sub, which its pretty safe to say, that the RLP's wont be able to take the same power as the Alpines. Hence my acceptance of a defeat in the Quarts. If there was a .6db difference in the RLP's with 600wrms each, then giving them half the power, is going to probably be roughly 3-5db difference. Thats an assumption, but I'm just going off what I have. The Alpines are the winner in the performance category, but price. Not so much. They may be the best SM sub, but their price is a bit outrageous. Not saying I wont possibly be picking up a pair to experiment with in my truck... I have always been curious of SM subs
I wasn't trying to single anyone out in my post, only pointing out what people can and can not actually hear. And I don't think the Alpine shallow Type R is over priced at all. For the performance you get, they are a bargain. They're not "cheap" because they aren't cheap - they are built well, designed well, and perform well. You don't get a new Ferrari for $500, you get what you pay for in this case.

I had the 254s. Those are the 10" version. I still have one. $25 + shipping and its yours. Its dusty from sitting on the shelf, but still looks new. I dont know if I ever even hooked it up. I hooked up the other one to test and I was so disappointed that I wall socketed it and threw them away. The other one has been sitting ever since... Shame since I bought the pair brand new online.

I didn't take it as you singling me out. Just wanted to make it clear is all. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And yes, you are right, yo do get what you pay for. I guess its just hard to fathom a "regular" price for less subwoofer. Guess ya just gotta think that you get alot in a small package kinda thing. Still hard to fork up that much money for less hardware and output. But when you are limited in space, you do get what you pay for. I was just hoping there was something out there that would beat the $300 woofer by a couple hundred bucks. I haven't had much personal experience with the SM subs. I have heard some. I did research them for a good solid 3 months.

In between jobs at the moment or I'd take you up on that offer. I have metal shavings in my carpet in my media room from drilling out rivets. I could use a good magnet. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hi Guys,

My question is which sub should I buy for my convertible mustang. I'm assuming I'll get no cabin gain and just need something to play loud and low. I was all set on the Alpine then saw something for the MB Quart RLP 304 . as much as I'd like to save a buck. I'd also like to hear and feel my music with the top down at highway speeds. Why a shallow? I have a collectible 88 McLaren and do not want a huge box behind me, as it has an elegant setup now and I'd like to keep it hidden.

Well did you read the thread and check out the poll results? There are 3 solid pages about this. If you read it, you should have you answer

Even though this thread is a year old... I have some shallow 8's you may be interested in...

Bettr, I've been reading up on the forums and you seem to like the smaller subs. Not to hijack a thread but I'm tossing around the idea of a shallow mount sub like the Alpine or a couple 8" subs in my Tacoma. For the 8" subs I'm eyeballin the Sundown SA-8...any suggestions?

Ya I have never done the big sub thing... The SA's are a great sub but they are used by a lot of people if that bugs you like it does me? Lol... How much room and power though?
