Battery not holding a charge?

I bought an SVR deep cycle battery and it arrived sitting in the high 10v - low 11v range. I got a battery charger and slow charged it for 10 hours at 2 amps. The battery then read 12.6v so I didn't think much of it. I get it in my car and it has a hardass time cranking, but it cranks. Then I turn off the car and the battery was reading 12.1v.

Also, I took the battery off the charger before I went to sleep last night and it was reading ~12.5v. I come back in the morning and check voltage and it's at 12.1v.

While the battery was under the hood and engine on, I cranked my system and I saw the voltage drop to 9v, then my HU shut off. My Diehard battery had no trouble at all under any of these circumstances.

So is the battery dead?

Sounds like its seen it's better days. Discharge it to around 10.5v then trickle charge it up... then discarge it again to 10.5v and trickle charge it again. If it wont hold charge after that then take it to the recycler and get $2.00 for it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

With the car running, what is the voltage? I should read at least 14.4 volts. If you see the voltage dropping with to engine on, it is time to get a new alternator. Hopfully a H.O. alternator. Check out this site http://www.4alterstart.com

Yeah, but **** that's a lot of work and I don't want to mess with it anymore. I'm thinking it's nearly dead. Even at 12.5v, it had a hell of a time cranking the car.

Nothings wrong with the alt and it has nothing to do with the battery not holding a charge.

Not all cars idle at 14.4 just so you know.

Did you just find out about HO alts? You seem to reccomend them to everyone with the slightest electrical problem, and always the same web site...

The way I see it, if your alt can't keep up with your power demand your lights will always dim (if it is noticable). You are putting a lot of stess on the alt and MAY cause it to fail prematurely.

We all have to realize that car audio is no cheap hobbie. Once you upgrade something you need to upgrade something else to have it run efficiently. I did some research on how to upgrade your system (if there is noticable dimmage). I've read that you should first get a Cap (approx. 1 frad per 1000 watts), then upgrade your battery and ADD ON the "BIG 3." Your dimmage should be reduced or gone, if not, might I consider a H.O. alt.

I would change it in that order, which I have except for the H.O alt, and I will have to change it.

Big3 would be the first thing you should do. Don't worry about the cap.

its definitely the battery man.....I had my Stinger batt sitting in my room for months and it kept the same voltage at 12.6 volts......

Right. . . What does an alternator have to do with a battery not holding a charge? Not in my case, but with any case. Don't say my alternator charged the battery because I had it on a battery charger.

P.S. Know your boundaries and stop giving irrelevant information.

Like Scottie said though, you may be able to save it with a little work. Unless a few minutes of your time spread over a few days is worth more than the cost of the battery it would be worth your time to try to condition it. If it doesn't come back to life, you're out a little bit of your time. If it comes back you've got a working battery. If it is recoverable and you don't try you threw away a usable battery.
