Audio upgrade opinions for my 2009 GT-R?

Under $5000 is the budget.
Fairly good sized budget then.

Are you looking for a complete setup - i.e., front and rear fill, amps for both, along with the sub stage? Just a front set? Do you want to run active? Do you want it to be purely towards SQ, or would you want it to get moderately loud, too?

Just to get an idea of what products to look at.

I have mixed feelings about the need for rear fill in a coupe, so for now I was planning on not doing anything back there. If it is really lacking, I'll do that in the future.

I'm looking for a 2 or 3 way setup up front, amplifiers, sub setup, and integration into the factory HU.

Examples of groups I listen to - Disturbed, StainD, Slipknot, Seether, old Metallica, older metal and today's hard rock/metal. I like some older rap such as NWA or toss in some Eminem, but that is the minority. I am most interested in SQ, not showing off as I go down the street.

not to post dump... but you sure that if you touch the audio it wont VOID THAT WARRANTY OF YOURS? ;-) Nissan will find a way to piss on you if you touch er in the wrong place.

Sexy *** car, we got a white one around here... sounds so purdy...

A GT-R owner had posted these pics which may help everyone see some mounting options.

What sticks out to me is the window track behind the door speaker. The door speaker used was a Micro-Precision 7.16 MK II which I believe has a mounting depth of 68mm.

First of all, dont listen to the Jl haters, Jl has always and still does make great product. I have heard nothing but great things about the new HD series. I alsos like the 10w7 for just the right amount of output and accuracy. Look into a dynaudio setup up front. Install is going to be huge on any component set you try. Take your time and ask questions, There was alot reccomended in this thread that is mediocre at best. (cdt for example is overpriced vifa drivers)

good luck and keep us updated on that beautiful car!

A nice shack in Alabama?

Hah!

Are you including the cost of a professional install in that $5k? I spent $2K on my hardware and another $800 on install. See sig.

For $5K you could spend $2K on a major install, including sound deadening, and still have plenty of money left for fantastic gear.

$5k is the budget including labor. I'd expect the biggest labor cost to be in the sub enclosure to make it look like an original part of the trunk. I feel like $3500-4000 should do it, but I like to be prepared for the unexpected.

nice ride, OP. you do seem a bit arrogant though.
but if i had an 09 GTR i would be too.
Sorry if I came across that way, but people like to throw out the tranmission comments or whatever that 45000 comment was supposed to be about.

I dont think you sounded the least bit arrogant, i do also agree that you may find better info for your needs on diymobileaudio.com. the majority of this site spends 3 times the money on a subsatge than actual musical reproduction(front stage).

I didn't know that when I registered here. But for the short time I've been on CA.com and DIYMA.com.... I'd have to agree that DIYMA is far more concerned with SQ than here. But that's certainly not to say that you can't find great advice on here about SQ. And yes, generally speaking, JL is not a favorite here.

I like these Image Dynamic components, but I really want to hear a set of DynAudio and Morel. If they sound better than the ID's, then I GOTS to hear it!

There's not many here that I've seen directly recommending SQ oriented speakers - the main recommendation in your budget range is the Rainbow Germaniums.

Link to them here -

http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=7041

There's a dealer on here for them - I'm not sure of his name, but I can bet someone else can tell you here that can give you more information on them. These speakers would also fit fine, too.

If you wanted to go higher - http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=4749 - the Morel Supreme's would be one way to go. These would have a better frequency extension, but I'm not sure on the difference between sound quality. I haven't heard any direct reviews of these, but the reputation of the company can speak for itself - and these are their top of the line models. They also fit, I checked that - most of the focal models I looked at were either fairly cheap, lower line, or they were 77mm and up. If you can fit that - then you should take a look - otherwise, yeah.

As for subwoofers.. For pure SQ - I'd say something like the Si Mag 4. A pure SQ oriented sub. Other ones to look at are the IDQv3, and the JL w7 model.

You probably won't see a whole lot of difference between them - but I put them in the order of SQ onwards, based on reviews I've seen. But honestly, you won't see a whole lot of difference between them - imo, at least.

As far as amplifiers go - you can't go nearly wrong with the JL Audio amplifiers. They're smaller than others, compact, and they are extremely well made. Like it's been said, they're moderately expensive, but I'll say for their amplifiers, the price is worth it at least. But, other extremely good options to look at are the ARC amps, as those are extremely good. Run a bit higher than the JL, most likely, at least for the top of the line models, and the lower will run about the same, but that's going to be as far as my knowledge goes for what would be noticeably better. And I can't say for certain it would be a noticeable difference to the ears. Again, I'm still going by reviews - I'm slightly lacking in actual experience listening to all these, especially side by side as would be needed.

You'll most likely need to pick the pair of components you would want first, and the subwoofer(s), and decide on the amplifier from there - based on the amount of power the speakers can use. I'd also make the recommendation of running the front setup active, with a 4-way amplifier (i.e., running the tweeters and woofers off a channel each, rather than running an amplifier to the passive crossover), which would allow you more flexibility over how you want to run the speakers. But, if you want to avoid the complexity of that, you'll want to go by the bridged power - you'll bridge the channels on the 4-way down to two, and power each set off that. So for the rainbow germanium's, you would want something approximating a 150 watts RMS to each side bridged @ 4 ohms.

Now, I'll let you sift through my post here and find the useful information. :p

Also, as a side note - this does feel sort of odd. I'm giving recommendations to someone with a GT-R, while I'm driving an old '96 Infiniti G20 for myself.

I think we should just put in sony xplodes, and you can send me the remainder of the budget -.-

Anyways, now that I took it slightly off topic - nice car. And DIYMA might be a bit better. They are more SQ oriented there than most here.

My first advice is to get off the JL bandwagon, you going for SQ or SPL?
With the equipment listen, you can tell the guy wants SQ.

At any case, there is nothing wrong with JL Audio, They make amazing products that are way ahead of the curve.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif That's the truth.

If he wants to run jl by all means let him run it. Nothing wrong with that. I would not worry about messing with your rears. Just focus on the front stage, maybe even consider running an active setup.
Do a 5 channel on the audio since you have an easy way of doing it.

Nothing sounds better then 5.1 surround sound in a car. I used to have it.

You can do a 3.1, but 5.1 wil work better. focus more on the front end more then the rear. It will be glorious
