Any tips for first timer building a ported box?

make the port as large and as round as possible. For example, a square port is more round than a rectangular one; an octogonal port is more round than a square port.
Also, keep the number of ports down to one, if possible.

What got me was how a square is more circle-ish than a rectangle, as if a square has less 90 degree angles than a rectangle.

OP... as stated before, screws are much better than nails, depending on the application. if your running a somewhat lower powered sub, nail will suffice... but if you get into any higher powered subs (1000 watts and up), i would go with screws. also, when tuning your box, dont forget to take into account your sub, wood, and bracing displacement.
