amp installation underneath car

Hello!

As I'm planning to rebuild my audio system for competition use I was searching the i-net for some pictures of amplifiers mounted underneath the car. I know, there's a lot of work approaching but if things work out I'll have an eye-catcher. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Now then, does anyone have pics showing the amplifier, the enclosure or the like? Who among you has done this kind of install before??? Links are welcome too!

Thanks in advance for your help.

hmmm.. sounds like a lot of work. if it is only a show car not that big of a deal. If it is going to be a daily drive i think you would need to build an water tight enclosure, mount it some where that it won't hit any speed bumps or the like. also it will need to be open to the inside of the car or something to get air flow so it doesn't over heat. i think it would be easier to mount it in the car.

Wow, you guys are quick!

The car will still be in daily use - no trailer queen! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

But it has a double layer floor panel. That makes it easier... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif The enclosure would be protected by the original underbody protection. Nevertheless watertightness on the one hand and ventilation on the other hand are required.

Maybe now u know why I'm asking for pics of finished installs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Mounting the hardware underneath the car would be a novelty in our local competition-scene. It's a challenge - and installation inside the car wouldn't be a that interesting. Besides that, up to now the amp is mounted inside the car.

Since it is a double layers floor panel, you could mount the amp on the lower layer with some reinforcements to ensure it is water tight and not in harm. Then cut the top layer out above the amp and create a hatch for easy access to the amp. Maybe have the hatch in the trunk? Or back seat floor?

Just an idea..

Agreed.

If you pull it off though, make sure you do post pics.

Someone posts a question about running wire under the car and almost everyone jumps on him saying it's a bad idea, but no body even questions why this guy wants to mount an amp under his car?

There's a difference between running a wrapped and loomed power wire under a vehicle, and installing the actual amp underneath the vehicle. It's much easier to put the insulated, jacketed wire under there because it's not as suseptible to the elements, doesn't have to be adjusted, etc, etc...I'm not saying it's not technically feasible, anything is if you put enough time into it - I'm just saying for a daily install it might not be worth that extra effort. Running a power wire under a vehicle doesn't take that much more extra effort to do.

That was my point.

Don't be concerned about safety problems etc. I'wouldn't build anything which could damage my car, me oder my passengers or any other traffic participants. Everything is well planned and realized diligent with the help of a mechanic.

The adjustment will be done with the headunit - no problem. The main-fuses are located inside the car so that's no problem as well. If the fuse inside the amp is blown there must be a technical problem. If everything runs normally that won't happen.

I must admit, water and temperature are two problems. But problems exist to be solved.

Finally (again) the question why: if you're trying to build a car which combines features of a (hopefully succesful...the current version is doing very well) ) competition car and all requirements for a normal daily use you need to be creative. You can't loose to much space on the one hand and need to impress judges on the other hand.

If you are aware of what you're doing you can realize a lot of things. If not: better keep one's hands off.

Best regards,

lobster

PS: Installation underneath the roof has already been done by other competitors and wouldn't be possible in my case because of a glass roof. ;o)
