You probably blew it or something...
His gain setting won't be the same as what yours should be unless you have the exact same HU putting out the exact same preout voltage to the amp
If he had a lower preout voltage than you, you definitely could've been clipping and pushing it beyond its limits, either way you should always set it once its installed in YOUR car...thats the whole point of the gain setting on an amp, is to adjust to individual preout voltages which vary widely
