They are the same sub. The different numbers in the model# are the impedences...which determine what amp you will need. Neither will hit harder or sound any different if you have the correct amp on them.

 
So the 1222d would be cheaper rout to go? And would deliver the same performance.
Not necessarily. I think you should pick out what amp you're going to get first because that will dictate which subs you need.

To the Op, ignore this post and do what ^ they say.

Changing the coil would change the speaker, if they go from a d2 to d4 coil the wire in the coil either needs to get longer or thinner, wouldn't that change the thermal power handling and mass of the cone assembly? I'm sure it wouldn't matter unless your on a meter trying to grab 0.01db, but I still am curious.

I would just go with a ported box tuned from 32 hz. - 35 hz.
