Alpine Type-R: Best at $200 (?)

I'm probably going to get an Alpine 12" Type-R 4-ohms DVC in an huge ported box tomorrow for $210 unless someone shows me the light, on something that is a similar price and makes a boom that would make the Alpine want to cry. By far the best I heard today was a couple 12" Polk MM124s in a sealed box, but even after whittling away at the price, I could only get it down to $350 for the 2 in a box and ready to rumble.....about $100 out of my price range.

Before I continue, let me do a short tribute to the MM124...

MM124 on Crutchfield:

OK, in the sealed box I heard it in, this is the most agressive sub I have ever heard. I have a song that rumbles to the lowest of frequencies, and it hit those low notes like you wouldn't imagine. It pounded them. Every single note was clear and distinct. Each one hit REAL hard. I can't say enough good things about that sub. Beware, that the rest of what I looked at was more middle-range stuff, and I haven't heard any other truely high-end subs, but I have a good ear, and I was impressed. By the way, I'm only running a max of 220 Watts to it (Clarion APX 600.5 amp). It sounded good. **** good.

Other inferior subs I listened to (all 12" in sealed boxes and at 2 ohms, unless noted):

Infinity: (2) Reference Series

Infinity: (1) Perfect (@ 4 ohms)

MTX: (2) Thunder 4500s - Complete crap, worthless, stay away

MTX: (1) Thunder 8500 (@ 4 ohms)

Polk:

Please note that all of the subs (except the MM124) were similar, and the Alpine didn't have too much on the others, but it was somewhat noticable. I drive a Sterling 827 SLi...I know you haven't heard of it, so don't lie. It's a hatchback, though, and it's the best first car I could have asked for. Anyways, bear in mind that everyone has different tastes and everything sounds different in every car. SO DON'T FLAME ME!!! But those subs do ****. So does the Alpine, but it's the best I can afford, I think. I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows another sub or 2 that will sound better for $200.

Don't bother to post any of that SPL-only shit. If all I wanted was a meaningless deep rumble, I'd just listen to my exhast. Not to say that I don't enjoy massive SPL, but without SQ, it's worthless.

Suprisingly enough, at $100 a piece after shipping ($20) and a box it'd probably end up right around $200 anyways...plus I know the owner of my local store, so I get the red-carpet service.

you would be mad to buy a type r. it is an 'ok' driver and just that, its nothing overtly special.

look at jl audio 12w3, adire audio shiva, re se. all are cheaper and a whole lot better than the type r.
