Alpine subs

so the alpines bass alot harder than the jls I take it from your post?
No couldn't tell you, i haven't seen anyone try to use the JL's for all out SPL, which is very common for the type-R. so i honestly don't know. go listen to them at a local shop!.

I'll tell you this. Back in the day 5 15w3's set a world record 171.7db

Thats loud enough to seriously damage your health and way louder than 99.9 percent of these forum members have even dreamed of.

alpine type r > JL W3v3 for SPL. When you push JL subs passed their mechanical limits they don't like it at all. A type r will be louder, and still sound pretty good. And it will last longer probably.

news flash, no subs like going beyond their mechanical limits.

however, the original w3's had a foam surround that was notoriously easy to break. and the new ones have a much stronger rubber surround

I like the reputation of jl subs and the 12w3's rated rms is a bit lower than the type r's and considering the amp I am running, might be the better choice. I like loud bass too but not at the expense of SQ. also, the the price difference doesn't seem that significant either.

The JL will be a bit more efficient with that power too, put it in the right enclosure and it will shock you

yeah, I think thats the way I'm gonna go, I found a place online where I can get them for about 150 a piece which compared to anywhere else seems like a decent deal. Also, Jl's website says that 300 watts is the optimum level for these subs which two would be perfect for my 600 watt amp.

Well I did it...ordered two jl 12w3's and am about to put in an order for a box from Ami Creations. I almost went with the Alpine's but after hearing everyone's input I decided that I'd rather have the better sound quality and I'm sure that the Jl's will still be loud enough, for me anyway. thanks for the replies everyone

woe woe woe, why not build the box yourself and save a couple hundred bucks?

what do you guys think about alpine subs? more specifically type r subs because i've been looking at two 12's but have heard that they are better for sound quality than overall bass. subsequently i have heard the exact opposite about kicker subs. the only subs i have had are mtx and they were nice but i don't have anything to compare them with. what do you guys think about all three of these sub brands?
IMO i think the MTX 7500's are great woofers for being loud and have very decent sound quality. Also very good for a budget setup. I had 2 7500's then 2 Type R's and id take the 7500's ANYDAY. Clean and Loud. I actually think i liked the 7500's more than my RE SE's even though i might get bashed for that comment lol. I honestly just didnt have a complaint about them

Type-R's are somewhat versatile because they can give decent SQ in a low power well built application. But can hammer the earth in an spl appication while sounding like a wet fart.
Kicker is ok, but dramatically over-rated and over-hyped in my opinion it has a certain bling factor. But i believe kicker is going the same direction as MTX.

MTX is a company which had great products back in the day, but has succumb to greed and profit-oriented design marketed to the un-knowledgeable crowd (as in an ad campaign claiming that an mtx sub having a larger X-max than a W7 meant it was better quality) Ultimately resulting in a very mediocre product which 12 year old kids at home watching "pimp my ride" get a boner off of.

Even that 22" jackhammer is about the most useless piece of shit you can put in your car. but hey if they can get 8000$ for a sub that puts out less than some 15's at 1/10th the cost, why wouldn't they?
MTX has their lower lines and their same old school type good quailty stuff. all the jackhammer and other bullcrap money making stuff are obviously their lower lines. As far as the 7500 and up thunder series subs....theyre great. Also their thunder elite amps are very underrated and i have yet to find another amp to clealy out-do them. BTW they are undoubtedly the best looking amps too IMO

NOT JUNK

600 watts to 2 type r's is not enough anyway

type r's will get louder then w3's after 600 rms or so

i had 2 w3's and liked them

but i switched them out for type r's and liked them enough i ended up doing 6 of them in my blazer

155 on music aint bad

should went with type x for sq. but idk how 600wrms would do on them. wouldn't justify the price.
