Alex's Silverado

Whats on the roof ? Ply ?
MDF because it's heavier. I wanted more mass up there than birch. Lots of people use birch for this because they want to save on weight. Me, I already have a ton of weight.

Birch is stronger, but also bendy too (not that MDF doesn't bend, but you know)

The truck is ~8,000 pounds gross with the batteries and enclosure. Will be heavier with the subs, a full tank of gas, and passenger(s)

Lots of progress today!!

Did two layers of MDF on the ceiling so far. Will be adding one more layer that stretches front to back and screws into the hollow middle support (that forced me to build the base layers in two sections)

Sides are built all the way up!!!

Shots inside.

On the back face, everything above where the baffle attaches is made of 2x6's and not 2x4's. Same for the sides above the headrests. It's SOLID to say the least!

Need to fill some small spots in the top corners, and they will be covered by the third layer of roof MDF too for good measure

Enclosure is basically done. Just have some fierglassing, caulking, and painting to do with it.

After this, it's just electrical //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Invest in some loctite PL 3x or 8x for that metal roof brace. If it hasn't already, it's likely to seperate from the roof.

Always have some PL on hand. That stuff is ridiculously strong and useful for lots of stuff. Just don't go crazy with it because it's pretty much permanent.

That's what I used...... Loctite 8x for the first layer between the MDF and the roof.......

I used a ton of it too, so the roof is going to be solid

I don't get why people are confused. I used the PL on the first layer and am gluing/screwing the other layers on

The 3X is actually just as strong or stronger. But the 8X cure time is a lot shorter. Just depends on what you're using it for and if you need strength or to quickly bond. Shouldn't be a huge difference in strength though, mainly just price.

Ok. I had a jack under it for like 8 hours on each

Finished up the last bit of fiberglassing and started painting

I'm doing flat black with red splatter. Will take pics when it's done

I accidentally ordered my RCA's wayyyyyyy too long, so I don't think I'm going to put my headunit in the dash. Going to get some split tubing and make it so I can give demo's while standing outside my truck (and still have control of the radio).

This serves several purposes:

1. If I'm not in the vehicle, someone won't increase the volume way into clipping where things would be damaged

2. I can give people demos without bing in the truck (so three other people could sit inside

3. I can easily remove my headunit when I'm on campus and not worry about it being stolen

4. When tailgaiting, I can control my music from the bed of the truck

So, something that was going to be bad turned out to be OK

I love the red splater paint ! Looks cool as hell ! **** those rcas could wrap around the truck twice lol !
Thanks! I like it too!

Yeah, going to hopefully be a gnarly demo truck

Video of the paint:

I'm happy with the paint on the third roof layer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
