Aeroports can decrease port size by 50%???

in the mean time, ill take the math, and the real world results from competitors over your opinion anyday.

math does not mean much. what you predict is gonna happen not always will.

another thing that is not factored in is with the round over port, the roughness of the wood can hurt or help db's.

In the original post about the 4" PVC vs a 4" aero and the gain of 7dB is it possible that a 4" port was not enough for the box tested, so by going to an aero which offers more airflow he wasn't choking the box as much and saw the big gain? Sorry for the long *** sentence...

Back to the original topic, is it pretty much accepted that by using aero's you can use 1/2 the normal required port area? If so then I could see the advantage to using them over a slot port, even for some daily boxes where the port can ending up taking up a LOT of box space.

I've only built one box with an aero, it was 4.25^3 @ 26Hz for a single 15" Tempest. It used a single 4" aero and had NO port noise, was very musical, and got surprisinly loud. This was a copy of the infamous "magic box" from a few years back on CSO when the Tempest was all the rage.

I sold the box/sub for $80 to some girl and now and then I hear from her about how her friends are amazed at how it kills their dual 12" set ups from BB/CC and it's a no name sub...LOL

oh for god sakes...does everyone miss the part about the REAL WORLD RESULTS that MATCH UP to the math?!?!

i showed posts by people who have seen the TL more times then they can count, and compete more times than they can count as well. their personal REAL WORLD RESULTS claim 1 4" aero port is EQUAL TO ROUGLY 25^2 in of slot port. last time i checked a 4" aero was ~12^2 of port.

another claimed 50-60% decrease in vent velocity.

so if i read those tests right, and the math showed a 56% decrease in vent velocity...

THE PERSONAL REAL WORLD TESTS SUPPORT THE MATH!!!!

to tell you the truth, im not sure about that guys gain. he claims 7db, and im not gonna doubt him, as i dont see him gaining anything for making it up. why would you make up a figure like that, not sell aero ports, and even make a free tutorial on how to make your own ports?

i personally think it was some other factor, but i cant say. i am skeptical of it, as i have said, but i wont call it BS outright.

Might end up doing that with a 3/4" roundover on some fat tubing... 5" maybe

seems to me like id be willing to choose the round over method over shelling out 30+ $ per 4" aero any day

there will be some. the larger the flare, the bigger the benefit. your gaining efficiency just by using a round port anyways. that mini flare is just a bonus.

its going to have to be calculated out, if you would really want to see what kind of a decrease in velocity you will gain.

or you can also use a couple sheets of 3/4" mdf, 8" sonotubes, and 1 $50 1.5" round over bit (not the best quality, but it would definatly pay for itself in the first couple uses), and 1 18" RL-P for some nice flares...

I gotta say... the camera (a Canon EOS-20D in this case) just doesn't do justice to the flares. The look much larger and have more depth in "real life". Yeah, the big-*** router bit was expensive, but the end result is really sweet.

hmmm good reads in here. i do have to say ive noticed a difference in output and sound quality in my setup. ive got 2 6" aeros and love em, only port noise i hear is because the port is right behind my seat, lol
