Advice for upgrade from 2x SA-8v2's

several ways to get that kick in the chest bass. Either peak heavily on a certain frequency range, lots of cone area with lots of power, or tune higher and sacrifice some lows.
I'd try to make a 4th order bandpass for your 8s if you want a cheap chest thump solution. Trade off is some "low" lows along with narrower frequency response range

The other solution is to get an 15" or 18" zcon or HDC4, tune around 34-38 hz.

Or stick with your original plan of proceeding to grab and hold onto a pair of sundown's nuts with the SA 12s, Try the same tuning 34-38 hz.

That tuning area along with a big enough enclosure should give you some lows still while extending the bass to the metal/rock section of music. If you want full on metal, old school EDM and rock setup, go for 42 hz in an average sized box(maybe tiny bit bigger).

I've had 2 JL W0 12s back then in 1.5 cubic foot enclosure tuned to 42hz walled off from the trunk firing into the cabin. It was only on 600 watts rms and they actually hit a tiny bit harder on higher hertz metal music(especially in the 60-100 hertz area) then my current Zcon 12". There was a tiny bit of chest thump going on with certain songs but that setup was completely and utterly lacking in lows, it could never hope of matching the Zcon's ability to hit hard on the 25-55hz section lol.
Yeah I don't think a 15 or 18 is really an option for me, this is in the trunk of a Pontiac G6, so space is somewhat limited. I think 2 12's is the most I can do. And depending on what 12's I go with I may end up trying to fire into the cabin, sealed off from the trunk so I can eliminate trunk noise.

And I listen to a wide variety of music. Metal, Rap, EDM, some country, Rock, pretty much everything. So I want a very well rounded sub stage that can BRING IT regardless of music choice. While I do want it loud and to hit really hard I want it to be accurate and sound good as well. Ideally something that can hit decently hard and loud still at lower levels while "blended" with the front stage for "SQ" listening, but be able to get RE*ARDED and break the car apart when I want it to and still sound decent (which would be 90% of the time haha). ZCON seems like a nice choice for that....But for that price I would only be able to get one, so I'm wondering if a single ZCON would still outperform say 2 ICON's or other comparable 12's in that class? They always say cone area wins, but the way you describe it sounds like the Z is quite the beast of a sub?

lol my single Zcon outdoes 2 c2 audio threatcon 2 12s in output. MOTOR FORCE BABY!

It may be louder but can you possibly get hit harder by a single 12 vs 2? At the moment I'm kinda debating between 1xZCON or 2xICON. Which of those 2 would hit harder on 3Kw?

most likely the two icons if you have the proper airspace for it.
Yeah I think I should have enough room back there. SSA specs for optimal ported box are 2.25 cubes per sub so 4.5cu 32hz should work well eh?

yup that should do it. Tune higher though. you'll mostly get lows with that box with little midbass punch.
Except didn't you say your Zcon @32hz had good response even up to 80hz while still murdering the lows? I know it's an Icon vs Zcon but it's the same manufacturers so you would assume they would have compareable results would you not?

Its good no doubt but its not crazy chest punching good(unless i walled off the trunk firing into the cabin), it was more for midbass blending and loud to the ear. At 33 hz, the setup was more of flexing the hell out of my car with lows doing mini shirt tricks. If i had a chance i would remake the enclosure and tune higher for metal and EDM because this sub has no problem reaching down low with Decaf and hip hop but it can be made for heavy chest thump in a different enclosure.

There's always tradeoffs to everything thats why you have dudes on here having two cars and two different builds a lot of the times.

Would still be better than what I get with these 8s tuned at 35hz probably lol. They lose almost all punch above 60hz and makes my voltage drop significantly at the amp trying to reproduce those frequencies loudly because of how bad they are at handling them. So I've changed my LPF back down to 60hz for the subs. Seemed to work fairly well so far...am able to crank the subs louder on rock/metal because 60hz has alot more headroom in music before clipping than 80hz. Less power+more thump=Thumbs up

lol your comment reminded me of all the idiots that say 8s and 10s are more punchy then 12s 15s and 18s. Clearly not the case with yours lol. Yeah with the icons you'll definitely see a huge improvement in all spectrums of bass, SSAs are pretty **** musical. With a large enough enclosure you'll get a pretty flat response tuning in the 30-35 hz region and a slightly peaky response in the upper bass regions with a 36-38 hz tuning from what i see on WINISD but that peakiness will give you that punch you want.

Yeah I know the ones you speak of haha. But I have heard even from the RAM box designs guy that he's heard the same complaint about the SA8v2s before that they are more of a 50hz and down sub and lack that upper punch and accuracy. Dont get me wrong they are a great sub and I've loved em for getting loud and they will take some SERIOUS abuse. I've fed them double their rated power with no extra batteries on a T2500-1BDCP for the last few months and they still are alive and kicking. I've gotten them fairly warm a few times after playing them hard for like 40-60 minutes straight but never got them stinking yet. And from what I've read a stinky coil is a very prominant smell in a vehicle haha.

Even playing 7hz below tuning I've yet to bottom them out lol.

Here's my latest vid I took of them getting re*arded one day. I gotta say if I get this much windshield flex (last song) out of these 8s I could only imagine what 2 12 ICONS would do on double the power lol....he'll even on the same power lol
