I'm starting to think that the easiest way to make the musical source sound like it is coming from outside the bounds of the car is with very specific (surround sound like but not HT) rear fill. Something that can take the sound and calculate reflected harmonics on the fly and reproduce them, modifying the sound given to the front and rear speakers to give a spacial illusion. Maybe there are some HT chips that do this well now.

I wonder if I could throw an inverter and my carver sonic haligraphy pre-amp in my car.

this is interesting...a couple of the very best cars I have heard didn't even have digital processing and they pretty well would have romped most cars I have heard now with much more advanced processing. I can't A B test them but when you throw in a few test cds with test tracks that are all about imaging and staging it is pretty obvious.
